Fics That Have Changed The Way I Look At Life In General
Uh, so herewith the pieces of goddamn fan fiction that, as the title suggests, altered the course of my life. In the sense that they are brilliant. Fics I quote often, think about often, put into my reading list so I can check up on them at least monthly if they’re still ongoing, etc. Or just fundamentally changed the way I look at writing and life in general, whether that be for stupid reasons (smut that has awakened something in me lol) or for more dramatic reasons (made me a better person or a better writer).
Some of these are fics I found years ago for fandoms I barely interact with anymore, some I’ll add as I continue to inevitably consume transformative works. Fics I’ve left long arduous comments under, or sent messages to the author bilaterally declaring my undying love for their words. Blah blah blah. I hope at least one author reads this description and knows that their efforts have left a serious impact on a stupid almost 20 year old teenager in Southern Africa. And thank you so much for that.

SOPHIE IVE FOUND IT
{Edit to comment July 2024 when added to life changing collection: this fic is here because, to this day, it’s still one of the funniest pieces of writing I’ve ever read. I re-read it every few months at least and have an absolute fucking hurl. God this is funny. And it was written when I was one year old??? Dang.}

Summary
Zuko had never excelled at anything. Azula was a prodigy. Uncle always knew what to say. And Father... Father was strong, iron-like. But Zuko had only ever been good at surviving. Putting one foot in front of the other in a grim show of stubborn determination, gritting his teeth and bearing it. Survival was all he had ever been taught. He knew how to do it. So when he was kidnapped by the Southern Water Tribe, he expected to fight as he always had. He didn’t expect to be taught instead how to live.
In a warring land, the Water Tribe forgave the enemy in an act of defiance. For this, he was torn from them, and this time, his wounds won't heal so easily.
Forced back into nothing but survival, the last person Zuko expected to see was Hakoda's son. Hakoda was a promise of safety. The relentless blue of Sokka’s eyes was a promise of happiness. Zuko could have both if he just reached out his hands, but he found them clutching into fists. After all, he’d been burned one too many times.
But hey, at least between Hakoda and Sokka, Zuko could appreciate the family resemblance of pure, asinine stubbornness.

Summary
[Act 2 of Smoke and Mirrors]
It's been two years since Jinx broke out of Stillwater and found herself the center of a family built around her protection. Sometimes, she even forgets it's not real. Sometimes she forgets that telling the truth could destroy it. Sometimes she forgets that's what she does-- destroy things.
It's been four years since Vi lost her second family. Sometimes, Vi would like to forget that it was her fault. She won't though-- she never will no matter what Ekko says. So she carries on-- carries Ekko-- carries Silco-- carries the Lanes-- carries the hope that one day Powder will get to come home. She has to believe that. It's the only thing that makes the burden feel worth the weight. It's the only thing that makes the compounding losses bearable and makes her get up in the morning. If there is nothing else, there is Powder.
There has to be.Series

Summary
This is a story about Harry meeting up with Draco Malfoy four years after the war. And a story about Harry, well, not hating his job per say, but it's not like he has much to compare it to and it seemed fine. His whole life seemed fine. Then Malfoy came along with and his flashy suits and fast car making everything seem dull in comparison, and Harry... Harry couldn't just leave well enough alone.
