He refuses to use a Mirkwood elf for this purpose because, as their Prince, they cannot refuse him, so to his mind, they cannot consent, even when one is practically handed to him a platter by this father. Thranduil, out of his mind with fear of losing his son, does what he needs to do to save his son’s life.
