Summary
Jacob straightened his posture, readying himself like a performer before curtain. As he paused for dramatic effect, he met each of their gazes. Every last one of them was utterly still, their eyes and attention trained on Jacob’s hands. Even Enoch, who was usually eager to deliver snide commentary, held his tongue. Raising the object of their awe above his head, it took all of Jacob’s willpower to keep from laughing: his friends had tilted their heads in unison, not unlike a row of oversized cats enraptured by a laser pointer.

Summary
Time went funny as Emma began her journey back to the beach. Her mind was clear – but the clarity proved stronger than intended, acting as a foggy barrier between her consciousness and reality. She blinked. Her legs were covered in sand and her arms ached as she dragged her boat back to its hiding place, covering it with leaves and brush. She blinked again. Low-hanging branches scraped the crown of her head as she hopped through the bog, taking a shortcut to hasten her trip to the house. She blinked once more, and her hand closed around the doorknob, the entry mat rough against her bare feet.
“...Emma?”
Emma’s eyes refocused.
“Bronwyn? What are you doing awake?”

Summary
“What in the world is that?”
Jon folded his arms, looking down at his discovery. “It’s Daisy’s bug-out bag. I found it in the bedroom while I was cleaning.”
Frowning, Martin reached over to tug the bag closer. It was loaded with pockets all down its sides and front, and whatever brand label it bore had been torn off. “What, like, a survival kit?”
“Right. Emergency supplies.” Jon carded his good hand through his hair. “Just in case.”

Summary
“It’s dreadfully hot out right now. All that weeding must be rotten work.” Frodo, who leaned out of an open window, rested his elbows on the sill. He eyed the bits of crabgrass and foxtail that peeked out of the pail at Sam’s side. “Especially with no clouds to block the sun.”
“No, sir, I’m not bothered,” Sam replied with an awkward smile, raising a gloved hand to wipe the sweat from his brow. “I’m used to it, really. Don’t you go worrying about me.”

Summary
“Technically, that’s his suit,” came Millard’s voice from the bathroom doorway. “You just made it for him.”
“Precisely! I made it, and I won’t have all my hard work soiled just because someone doesn’t know how to keep his breakfast in his stomach!”
“Didn’t eat breakfast,” muttered Hugh, who was nearly doubled over, arms clutching his middle. “I think it’s just nerves. Didn’t mean to frighten you, Horace. I’m sorry.”
For a moment, it seemed as though Horace might snap his clipboard in half. But then he took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and reset his face to an apologetic smile. “You don’t need to be sorry. I’m the one who got snippy. Is there anything I can get you?”
“...No. No, I’m alright.” Hugh straightened with a wince. “It’ll pass in a moment, I reckon. Nothing to worry about.”

Summary
Alma picked up the blooms, studying them. They looked oddly familiar.
“...Did you steal this from Miss Avocet’s garden?”
“Do not deflect. I asked you a very important question.”
“And I asked you one as well.”
Isabel’s grin widened at Alma’s heatless glare. “...Perhaps I did steal it, yes. But only because I wanted you to have it, mon petit oiseau!”
