Sam had been nervous about his girlfriend Penny's 18th birthday for weeks, terrified of the matching mark that would no doubt appear on her. But when she shows him that her mark is not the same as his, he finds himself completely lost.

Penny's life has been on autopilot for years, completely settled on a routine that doesn't really make her happy, though it's all she has. When she starts getting a crush on Pelican Town's newest resident, she refuses to believe it could be anything more, even if she's never seen his soulmate mark.
Elliott has always been a bit skeptic of the marks, opting out of the whole madness that was trying to find your soulmate. When he meets the lovely local teacher, though, he starts to think a little more deeply into what love is, and if the marks make any sense at all.

Summary
When Leah hears a rumor that someone in town might have the same mark as her, she freaks out. She had grown distrustful of the soulmate marks due to her past experiences, and doesn't want to be burned again. But she can't seem to confirm or deny what she's heard, and the woman who is possibly the one for her acts cold and distant whenever Leah is around.
Haley takes a while longer to figure out why Leah had even asked her to the Flower Dance the year prior, but now that she knows, it's the only thing she can think about. She decides it's better to rip the bandage now, no matter how much all of this soulmate business terrifies her.
