Summary
Since the day he'd received the letter that named him the long-lost heir of a fortune, Jimmy had made sure Thomas always had whatever he wanted. He’d bought a library of books, an exquisite grandfather clock, a gramophone and all the latest hit records. Thomas always smoked fine, expensive cigarettes lit with a shiny new silver lighter. They regularly took trips to Savile Row for bespoke clothing—which Thomas wore every day, rather than his uniform, because Jimmy preferred him to be relaxed and comfortable. And Jimmy took every opportunity to indulge Thomas, ordering nothing but the richest food from their cook.

Summary
Jimmy looked back at Thomas once he’d pulled the cord that signalled right to the kitchen, letting Mrs Lewis know they were ready for their breakfast. Thomas had propped himself up in bed, extra pillows against the headboard to lie back on. He smoothed a hand down his middle, over each button on his pyjama top, each straining more and more the lower his hand drifted, past where the two sides splayed out to accommodate the mound of his belly. The bottom button was gone, having popped off one recent evening after a very indulgent feast that had started in the dining room and moved up to the bedroom for dessert.

Summary
With the customary formality required of a butler, Carson ushered them inside. The two of them followed, and while Jimmy couldn’t help but catalogue Carson’s reaction to Thomas, he also couldn’t help noticing Thomas’s delight in entering his former home and place of work through the front entrance. He looked about at the soaring ceiling, a smile pushing his now plump cheeks up and revealing his dimples. When he looked over and a degree or so down at Jimmy, the pudge under his chin pushed out over his collar adorably.
