Summary
It's been two years since Pearl went missing.
In that time, Grian had done well for himself, earning a promotion to head architect at the company his good friend, Scar, ran. His best friend Mumbo was finally getting his urban agriculture project approved, and he'd heard they found a building to put it in. Even his younger brother Jimmy got a well-paying job working with foster kids for the city.
But the pain still lingered. The type that came from family secrets he couldn't reveal, that came from his deformed wings, and from the memory that Jimmy was all he had left. The guilt that came from the family heirloom tucked away his drawer, the very cause of all of this.
When a new villain threatens Hermitopia, can Scar and Grian find the strength to trust themselves?
And what if Grian could move on, start a new chapter, and protect his friends and remaining family? Put those old ghosts to rest?
What if Grian doesn't have the choice?Series

Summary
“Grian.” Mumbo’s voice came through the line like a toll.
That caused him to pause. “Hey bud, what’s going on?” Putting his friend on speaker, Grain bent down to sort through his pots.
Silence seeped through the phone just long enough for Grian to pull away and close the cabinet, forgetting about dinner.
“Mumbo–”
“Turn on the News.”
Moving as if on autopilot at his friend’s frantic tone, Grian scooped up his phone and hurried over to his living room, flicking on the television. Fire filled his tv screen, and Grian’s heart sank. He couldn’t breathe.
“Didn’t you tell me Jimmy–”

Summary
“Who knew potatoes were such a superfood?”
“I do, of course.” Mumbo stated matter-of-factly before turning to Grian. “Where do you keep your soap?”
“Under the cabinet– No Mumbo, I can’t let you–”
“You’ve been through enough. Please let me handle the dishes. I promise I won’t break any.”
“No, Mumbo, please, let me–” Grian subconsciously rolled up his sleeves so he could move the bowl directly into the sink to start cleaning it, but Mumbo didn’t let go of the bowl as he grabbed it. “Come on, it’s really no–”
He didn’t hear Scar’s wheelchair sneak up behind him, but he very clearly felt when Scar gently grabbed a hold of his arm. In a moment, Grian realized his mistake. He let go of the bowl, and looked down at his decimated arms. After saving his brother from a burning Town Hall, Grian must live with the consequences.

Summary
“This is not what we agreed to Scar.”
The moon had long since rose over Herotopia, and Scar sat atop one of the tallest buildings, just scanning the darkness. He was tired, and sore, and felt his magic already flickering, causing him to stumble across some of the rooftops. But he didn’t care.
“You’ve been out there for hours, already stopped 3 muggings and returned a lost kid to their parents.” Cub’s voice voice through his headset. “Come back.”
Cub wouldn’t understand. That buzzing sensation Scar felt every time he put his mind to something, that wouldn’t fade until he got it or crashed out. He’d tried to explain it to his mentor many times before, but he didn’t understand.
The two of them were close, but could never be the same.
“Just a bit longer.” He muttered.Series

Summary
“You know,” Scar slurred through a mouthful of food. “I got the beef this time, and I really do think the chicken is better.”
“Well, I wouldn’t really know that, would I?” Grian laughed. “I think the cooked rabbit is just fine.”
Scar made a big deal of cringing. “Jeez! Sorry, I guess I forgot about that for a second. But wait a minute, I’ve seen your fridge, and you have like, a lot of eggs–”
“Ethics were never my strong suit, personally.” Grian ripped into his lunch.
“Eggthics.”
The Avian dropped his fork into the bowl and just stared at the Vex. Scar didn’t break his face of glee as he continued to munch away at his tasty food. Grian knew that saying words in anger, rage even, never helped anyone, so he chose to instead make a big show about rolling his eyes before settling back in.Series

Summary
It was fascinating, watching the other man work. When the fire had sprung to life again, Grian felt his stomach drop, frozen in place as unnatural pillars aimed for residential homes. But the other hero had no such qualms, running right back into danger after almost meeting his end at the hands of a second-floor ceiling. He really was incredible. Unlike Grian.
Ok, maybe death-dropping from 200 feet up in the air only to smash into someone hadn’t been the smartest idea in the world, but Grian had panicked! Watching the building collapse, only to see Hot Guy not moving really kicked his ass into high gear, and he moved without even thinking. Overall, it worked out pretty well! Even if his already messed up arm was burning something fierce, and his head was spinning with colors that he couldn’t quite identify. But those were problems for later.
Because as he looked to the hero for guidance, all he saw was that the people weren’t leaving.Series

Summary
“Hey cutie.” Bright blue hair crept out of the shadows, a smug smirk painted on Scott’s face. He had a backpack slung over his shoulder. “I was worried you weren’t going to come.”
A smile graced his face involuntarily. “Eh, I almost didn’t. Did you see the weather earlier? But, you know, I figured I couldn’t leave my favorite reporter hanging.”
Scott grinned. “Glad to hear it. I wouldn’t want you going to anyone else.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it.” Jimmy glanced around. “You’re the best at what you do.”
“Aw,” Scott slung his backpack onto the ground, unzipping it to reveal a manilla folder. “You flatter me.”
There it was. A kind of smoothness to their conversations that even the ones he had with his closest friends lacked. It was fun, something Jimmy wasn’t used to. Scott was just someone who made him smile without any effort.

Summary
Once in the sky, away from prying eyes, the new hero groaned. Though he was feeling much better, the flying parts of him were tense and sore from how much he’d overused them a few nights ago. And for some reason, the night off only made that pain worse. Rolling his neck, Grian hoped for some kind of relief.
That wasn’t the only thing making him tense.
Flying while using a cell phone would probably qualify as illegal if people could still fly, yet Grian couldn’t stop checking his phone. And the initial annoyance had shifted to anger. Mumbo still wasn’t texting him back. It had been over a day since their quasi argument, and Grian was no closer to figuring out what exactly the other had up his butt. On any other day Grian would have just assumed his friend was busy, except he could cleary see that Mumbo was posting and using his phone.
Looking back over the city, Grian resisted the urge to roll his eyes. If his dearest friend wanted to be pissy, let him. It wasn’t like Mumbo had the patience to keep this up.Series

Summary
Mr. Ren Canis. With perfectly styled hair, pristine leather jacket, and the dumbest pair of teal sunglasses you’d ever seen. On first look, he seemed much more like a dancer than a successful CEO. But there was something about the way he carried himself that just screamed power and prowess. His ears flicked when he spotted them.
“Hello my dear colleagues!” He waved to them. “I’m so glad to see you’ve made it. Welcome to our Octagon building.”
Mumbo didn’t say anything, much to Grian’s pang of annoyance. “Hi Ren, it’s good to see you.”
“Oh Grian, it’s my pleasure to see you as well.” Ren said smoothly. “And Mr. Jumbolio, Mr. Goodtimes, it’s a delight to see you as well. I must admit, I was surprised when Grian accepted my offer, but I am more than happy to show all three of you around my dear lab.”Or

Summary
“I cannot believe they’d pull something off like that.” A cow hybrid said to her human counterpart. “Broad daylight. They were in and out in what–”
“Like four minutes. No one even knew it was being robbed.” The human interrupted. “I mean, I know crime is bad and all, but like, it’s kinda refreshing? Like, a victimless crime, one could say.”
“Yeah, it’s classic.” The other agreed.
Cleo smirked.Or, Cleo is a crime boss, and their team only sometimes makes mistakes.

Summary
“What do you think we have to worry about tonight?” The hero asked.
That was a question with dozens of answers. The same as all other nights. Muggings, robberies, car accidents… But if the other was asking it, that must mean there was a specific answer he was looking for.
Rain poured down around them, and the lights flickered as the fat drops of water obscured them. Even Hotguy’s visor was blocked by raindrops, his eyes even more hidden than usual. He couldn’t see well like that…
“Monsters.”Or, Grian is learning to trust his abilities.
