It's using my body, and all I can do is watch. If I'm lucky, I get to pretend I'm an outsider catching a glimpse from above. A bird circling the scene of a crime-to-be, impervious to the calamity. Just a bird. Gaze watchful, but indifferent. A fleeting shadow, wings flapping until I disappear behind the soft grey haze of merciful winter clouds.
I don’t think I'll be lucky today.

Océane lingered outside the cell a moment longer than necessary. She was under no illusion about the cost of her bravery. Even if she fought, even if she ran, even if she begged, it would always end the same.
She took one more breath, as steady and deep as possible, and slid the key she’d stolen (borrowed) into its lock, a faint tremor passing through her hands. Calren was behind that door — what was left of him, anyway — and he, more than anyone, needed the one thing she had to offer.
Mercy.
It was going to get her killed, and she had made peace with that. It seemed far easier to risk death over a good reason than to live with a version of herself that would have chosen differently.
