It had been a busy week, but right now they were in orbit, so Kelly and Ed thought this would be the perfect time to go to the mess hall and hang out.
Then Gordon heard about it and insisted he join them as well, inviting John and Bortus along. Neither of them trusted him but John was always up for a drink and Bortus begrudgingly agreed that he needed to de-stress somehow (especially now that his nicotine addiction was gone). At that point they decided they might as well invite Claire and Talla, but Claire was spending time with her sons and Talla was preparing for the Orville’s next visitors as far as making sure they weren’t murderers in disguise or something. Isaac, generally having only observed these mess-hall-and-drink-chats from afar also agreed to go when Kelly asked him.
Drinking whenever they weren’t speaking (well, except for Isaac obviously), the six crew mates talked about work, food, old art, and generally whatever came to their minds as they drank more and more...
Addressing the characters' alcohol addiction and some of their trauma that the show lwk glossed over.

"That's all I ever wanted,” and as he spoke, he suddenly felt his mind become fuzzy.
“And I want to be a father to your children. When I think of Ty’s face looking up at me, I gave him nothing in return,”
But even when all Isaac had known was what he was told to do, in that moment on the ship with Ty…
“And all he wanted was love. Well, I have enough love for all of you. And I'm going to prove it…”
Now, truly blessed with emotion, he could finally think outside of simple logic. All that meant, though, was that as he and Claire danced, Isaac pondered on something bigger.

“Lieutenant Keyali’s date of birth would be approximately 100 days to Lieutenant Malloy’s date of birth. Lieutenant Malloy's date of birth is 109 days to Captain Mercer’s date of birth. The difference between Captain Mercer’s date of birth and Commander Grayson’s date of birth would be approximately a week. Finally, gathering from previous data, the difference between Commander Grayson’s date of birth and Commander Bortus’ date of birth is 5 days,”
“Thanks,” Ed responded.
The room went silent, all of them except Isaac were thinking the same thing.

It was a strike through his “body.” It was pain.
Yes. Pain. The most adjacent to emotion Kaylon were meant to feel. Isaac had always pondered over that part of his species’ past. He was aware of its inhumane purpose. He was also aware that it had been that pathway that had caused him to feel, if only for a short while due to its extremely weakened state. ..
If a Kaylon was no longer functional, they would be deactivated, yes. However, the first Kaylon had all but terminated this feature.
The positive and negative spikes in efficiency depending on certain occurrences was all that had been preserved, as it was essential to the core of their being.
It was that part of the function that had made Isaac curious about the rest of it.
He remembered the treatment of him not very long after the Kaylon battle. He had not known what he was observing, except for that it seemed to be a negative emotion. And it had indeed been extremely interesting. Of course, the crew had eventually approached him and explained that what the others had been doing was a way to express disdain. Or as the Captain had put it:
“Hatred.”
