“I know this is all strange to you,” Vash continued, “but we’re so glad you’re here.” He touched Legato’s hand; he felt ill. “Glad you’re alive, glad you’re getting better. You’ve put me through hell but I know you’ve been through hell yourself. You didn’t deserve it.”
Legato wanted to speak. There was so much inside him, something deeper and rawer than anger, silver-quick and punishing. He wanted to punish. He wanted to be punished. He wanted the words he needed to fit his mouth. But his throat burned, and he said nothing.
Vash ran his thumb lightly up and down Legato’s hand.

His eyes are swollen the day of the funeral. In that way it’s like the first time they met. Legato was small, bruise-faced, mostly broken; Nai, with his elegant white hand, had tipped his chin back and looked into his soul.
“Did you want it?” he’d asked.
There were three answers Legato could have given, two real answers if he didn’t play dumb, and he knew even then that his master had no patience for stupidity, even less for people who pretended at it.
“Nothing has ever happened to me that I didn’t want to happen,” Legato said.
And Nai, handsome Nai, looked at him with pleasure in his eyes and smiled.

Summary
He didn’t think he could ever care about a human, but here Legato is, body broken, curled in his lap. His fragility should be infuriating. Instead Knives feels something like loss. He splays his hand on Legato’s back, feeling the thin beat of his heart.
“Bluesummers,” he mutters.
Those gold eyes straining up at him, nearly shut.
“Master,” Legato wheezes, blood shining on his mouth. “My master.”
And he doesn’t understand it, can’t begin to understand it, but Knives lifts him closer, brings his lips to the seam where Legato’s dark hair parts. There’s a tender ache in his throat. Something about Legato’s love, his brokenness.

“How’s your night been?”
Nai’s brother settles next to him, with his earnest eyes and floppy hair. His tie is loose, his dress shirt wet from dancing, and he’s familiar like an old dream. Legato’s fingers tighten around the head of his cane.
He’s always found it difficult to talk with Vash, disconcerting: Nai’s face, but everything about it means something different.
“It’s nice to see other people happy,” Legato says blandly, and continues eating his wedding cake.

That was what he wanted. He hadn’t known until he saw it—the slim figure listing, one hand in his pocket; the blue eyes nearly clear, like rain. He felt a confused rush of emotion, words he was about to say, words he’d already said. All of them pent up behind his mouth, somewhere in the place where dreams begin.
The man with the clear eyes glanced up and for a moment he was arrested, lips parted, unable to breathe. Then the crowd formed again in knots, and when it broke the train station was empty, a name on his lips he barely knew how to say.
Legato.
He didn’t even know whose name it was yet, the man’s or his or both, some larger idea, hopelessly muddled.

Nai wasn’t, strictly speaking, the one who had rescued him. It was Rem’s group, their mission, and the first anyone had seen of Legato was a bundle in her arms, sticklike and cellar-pale, a raw animal. He owed his life to her, even if he never managed to behave that way.
But it was Nai by his hospital bed, rubbing Vaseline carefully on his chapped lips, heaping the bed with real blankets, humming something under his breath until it felt like a song Legato had always known. Later Nai was the one who dipped his head into the sink, hands firm in his hair, and dyed it blue. Teal, nearly. Outrageous, extravagant. Loved, he thought, looking in the plastic mirror Nai held up to him, a smear of dye wet on his forehead. One corner of his mouth jabbing compulsively up, up, like a smile.
