“I…” Dazai choked on a sob, his face crumbling, brows pinched together, eyes forcing out more tears, and mouth wet with strings of saliva connecting his top lip to his bottom one, “I hate you.”
Chuuya wanted to punch his lights out, wanted to stand up and drag him outside of the door, wanted to activate Tainted and level the whole apartment building. He wanted to smash the mirror in the living room to pieces, wanted to toss himself and Dazai off the balcony, wanted to set fire to every inch of the god forsaken world that drove them to this point.
Or: Dazai shows up to Chuuya's apartment after a bad recon mission, it goes nothing like the previous times they'd done this.

Summary
Dazai got a look at what was keeping him tethered to the ground. It was a gnarly bear trap and from what he could see, looked to be old and rusted, sinking its teeth into the flesh right above his ankle, almost completely shut. It had gotten him in the space between his pant leg and socks, the torn and mangled flesh from trying to escape bleeding openly onto the snow.
Dazai was about to open his mouth when Chuuya slapped a hand over it at a sudden rustling in the woods near them, he resisted the urge to bite down on the leather as even more panic ran through him.
This was truly the worst case scenario. He was unable to escape, in the dark and freezing forest like a sitting duck for the gifted they’d been trying to get information on.
Or: A stakeout in the middle of winter goes wrong.

Dazai whipped around at the sheer panic in his partner's voice. The ice cracked underneath Chuuya's feet and Dazai watched as Tainted attempted to make an appearance before it caused more of the ice to crack. Within an instant, Chuuya was plummeting downwards with a splash and a curse. His heart dropped through his chest, he swore if he looked down he'd see it skidding across the frozen lake he was standing on.
There was something wretched that spindled up through Dazai’s body: fear. An emotion he was uncharacteristically accustomed to, something he usually never felt when in the presence of his partner- his partner who had just fallen into freezing water.
Or: While on a joint mission with the Armed Detective Agency, Chuuya falls through ice on a frozen lake, it's up to Dazai to help him.

“It looks… bad.” Dazai settled on truthfulness. Not teasing, just a simple statement, “Matted.”
Chuuya threw the brush against the mirror.
Or: Chuuya takes the brunt of a fight for Dazai and in retaliation, Dazai has to confront the ugly feeling in his chest, one that unfortunately decided he cared about his partner.

Satoshi grabbed Chuuya’s shoulders and tossed him on the floor, landing a hard kick into his spine. Chuuya, true to his nature, didn’t even flinch. Atsushi struggled against his cuffs, body instinctively trying to escape, but they wouldn’t budge.
Chuuya had been right, this was about to get fucked up.

Summary
Dazai froze, the sound of a gun’s safety being clicked off was something embedded in him. He didn’t dare to turn around, he knew who was standing behind him. There could only be one person who could get this close, who knew where to look, who had been looking in the first place.
“Chuuya,” He spoke, voice low and carefully neutral yet hesitant. He didn’t know which version of his partner- former partner he’d find when he turned around, if he turned around. Chuuya could be angry, volatile and destructive. Maybe he’d be a blank slate of nothingness, sent by Mori to kill on sight.
Dazai wasn’t sure he even wanted to find out.
Or: Chuuya finds Dazai two weeks after his defection in an alleyway, a conversation follows.

Their eyes locked and Chuuya thought he would drown in the amount of despair present in the ones he was staring into. There were dark rings under Dazai’s eyes, his skin looking like it had been pulled taut over the bones of his face and fuck Chuuya had seen devastation before, had caused devastation before, but it didn’t hold a candle to this.
