It wasn’t a particularly deep thought that drove the focus out of his gaze. It hadn’t been that, similar to all the gentle flowers outside, lounged on soft pillows of a sofa after a long day of work, he did not wish to trade his repose for the view outside and would prefer to be left alone with his comfort, either. It was merely disappointment, mild in the touch of it that darkened his features in a long-learned way, but present enough with him at that moment that he could not look past it and enjoy the view, be it out of the window in front of him, or of the fireplace cracking, and throwing its beckoning light at him from the side.

Summary
XChara somehow escapes his previous universe right before XGaster "merged" him and XFrisk, ending up in the universe of Glitchtale. He lives his life there, often missing his old world and holding on to any connections he has, and using overwright to give himself anything he needs.
When monsters return to the surface, XChara find himself close to everyone (even if it's somewhat awkward) and Betty attempts to fulfill her purpose, all goes well until her attempt on Sans' life, ending up captured and restrained within a reformatory (although only because Frisk had hope of reforming her). Many candidates were considered but had conflicts considering the current state of monster affairs, ending up with XChara being asked. He would have declined but it's hard to refuse Asgore.
