His eyes met hers through the lifted visor, and she fell silent. She couldn’t tell the color nor why his expression had simultaneously dropped, but she found them soft. Some contradiction of innocence and violence seeping out with every flutter of his lashes, so carnally confusing that it left her with her heart thumping aggressively and her cheeks warming.
She never cared to figure out who he was beneath that mask, nor why he was so protective over his identity. If that was how he wanted to be, then so be it. It didn’t matter to her. They were but acquaintances, definitely not friends and hardly ever cordial. Nothing further. So it didn’t make sense for her to care about the true face of the increasingly complex man.

Well, obviously. Adrian always wishes he was the one who got to kill every bad guy. Like, when he found out Osama bin Laden was dead, he was kind of disappointed.
But this is a different thing. Adrian got to kill plenty of other Nazis that day—more than Peacemaker, actually, he’d like to point out—so it’s not really about missing out. It’s more like, he wishes he just got it together and murdered Chris’s dad in that prison. Or maybe a long, long time ago. Then maybe Chris wouldn’t be acting like this.

Emilia pulls the ice off from her hand as soon as the door swings shut behind Chris.
Well, that conversation went great.
At least he’ll leave her alone for a while. That’s always how it seems to go—they get along for a bit, it’s kind of nice, and then they get in a fight, and Chris mopes for a week or so before he comes back to try again.
She misses when Chris was just an asshole. He was a lot easier to deal with, then. She even misses when he just wanted to fuck her. It was simpler.
