Summary
Rand presses on and takes Ebou Dar, pushing the Seanchan back into the sea and discovering someone unexpected in the city.
The palace was in an uproar.
Mat carefully maneuvered around the rushing servants — both those wearing Tylin's House Mitsobar's colors and the barely-dressed slaves that the Seanchan had brought with them or… or created here.
"Lord Mat, what are you doing in the halls?" one of Tylin’s people fussed at him as she passed by — no broad grin on her face today. "I'm certain your things have been packed already, or the queen can have new clothes made for you. You must find her majesty. She will be most cross if she is forced to leave without you." But she was in no mood to grab him and take him to Tylin, off on her own hurried and panic-driven errands.
Forced to leave?
And Mat felt something that he hadn't felt since he'd woken up here in the palace, every part of his body sharp with pain and a looming dread at the back of his mind when the first sound he heard was Tylin's voice — he felt hope.
It had to be Rand and his Asha'man. Nothing else could cause fear like this.

And he knew his window of opportunity had passed, but then he’d seen the bush, and what was growing on it, and it was probably the sun and exhaustion and lack of water getting to him, but he’d decided maybe…maybe he didn’t need the window anymore. Maybe he could just try punching through the wall and seeing if he could still get in.

Summary
Before entering Rhuidean, Rand confides to Mat about what happened with Elayne, prompting Mat to make an impulsive gesture.
After Rhuidean, neither of them mention it for months, dealing with their separate traumas.
Then, before the battle with Couladin in Cairhien, they finally continue the conversation.
"Didn't Egwene just break up with you, too? Your luck with women isn't terribly good right now."
"Thank you for the reminder," Rand said, though he didn't sound offended. Mat congratulated himself for mentioning Egwene. He'd had a feeling that Rand was more bemused by their breakup than he was heartbroken. "Maybe I should swear off them entirely."
"What, and go for men instead?" Mat joked but then he saw a cautious light in Rand's eyes and- hmm. "Do you go for men?" It had never come up — not with Rand being all but promised to Egwene for most of their lives. "Any men in particular? Don't pick Lan. Nynaeve would kill you."
Rand flicked an amused glance in Mat's direction. Amused and maybe a touch relieved. "Not Lan," he said. "Not everyone likes people their parents' age, Mat."

When the TV series started airing, I was reminded of how unsatisfying I found Mat's romantic future in the book series, so I decided that I would write something where I snuck him into the Randland polycule. This series splits off from TV canon during S1E6: the Flame of Tar Valon, so everything that happens into the show prior to that is canon here, but from this point forward, I will be repurposing book canon to suit the needs of the story.

Summary
When Elayne and Nynaeve request that Mat move into the palace to help them search for the Bowl of the Winds, he comes up with a plan to ward off Queen Tylin's pursuit of him - a fake engagement with Elayne.
"Nynaeve, I'd like a moment alone with Master Cauthon," Elayne said, not taking her eyes off Mat's face. He would move into the palace, no matter what she had to do to make it happen.
"If you want so badly to waste your time," Nynaeve muttered, storming off. Mat winced when she slammed the door behind herself.
"Sheep's swallop," Mat muttered. "Bleeding bollocks, does everything that woman does have to be so loud?"
Bleeding… what? What were…
"Master Cauthon," Elayne said. She cast about for a place to sit. There was nowhere. He was on the bed, of course, so that wasn't an option. The one chair in the room was piled with nonsense and topped off with that ridiculous hat. "We are both reasonable people." Elayne forgave herself for the lie. "Surely we can come to an arrangement."

He knows that his name is Mat Cauthon, and that he was brought to the tower by a member of the Red Ajah after he killed a little girl and her family under the grips of Shadar Logoth. He knows that the attempts of the Yellow Ajah to heal him have left his memories blurry and untrustworthy.
He doesn’t know why everything feels off, as though the weave of the world itself was torn and stitched back together incorrectly. He doesn’t know why the voice in his mind assuring him that he did nothing wrong sounds so much like the man he can hear crying in the room next to his.
Or…
Things get fucked. Unfortunately for everyone (at least if you ask Mat), he’s going to have to be the one to set them right.-
