The future feels bright, attainable, and Kayla gets to work with the weirdest, nicest woman she’s ever met. She thinks about their night sometimes, lay of the land turning to dinner turning to drinks turning to her mouth pressed hot and desperate against Jess’s. She remembers the smooth fabric of the sheets against her body, the warm, sure weight of Jess’s hands on her ribs, stomach, thighs. Her soft laugh and bright apartment, a strange desire to build a pillow fort and stay under there with her for as long as possible.

It’s freezing outside, goosebumps scattering across her body as she huddles against the cold, unfeeling wall of the building trying to escape the wind’s bite. She’s in a short dress, she’s always in too short of a dress these days, like everyone wants to see her peeled back and flayed alive, and it offers no protection against the weather and all Kayla wants is to curl underneath the clean, soft sheets on Jess’s bed until she’s warm again.
