Look, Max has never been a bad guy but the law says otherwise. It’s not like the sheriff can be trusted but he’s not in any position to call the man out, especially when he’s already on the run. He stumbles into the shed of a massive ranch while avoiding persecution, almost dying thanks to spooking the ranch owner. After dodging a bullet(literally), he manages to convince the man to let him spend the night and by morning the man offers him a better deal. Be his ranch hand in exchange for cash, food, and shelter- sounds fair, but the man’s antics make it a hard bargain. It doesn’t help that the man’s circumstances are Max’s fault, but what he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.
