    “Link, I…” Zelda looked at the letter again. Her eyes flashed with utter fury. “There is- something’s happened. A family has arrived in Kakariko, from Lurelin. They asked Impa for your whereabouts.”

    “Oh,” Link said. “Is that all? Do they need help?”

    Zelda took a deep breath and put the letter down. She took Link’s hands.

    “Link, darling,” she said, much softer now, as if trying not to spook him. “Their matriarch claims to be Aryll.”

    One hundred years ago, unknown to everyone, Aryll survived the Calamity. Unknown to her, Link was brought back from the dead.

    Now, with Ganon gone and news of Link and Zelda's survival spreading through Hyrule, Aryll goes in search of her big brother alongside her family. But how to prove herself? How to confirm that she's exactly who she says she is?

    Rhoam had called him a knight. Then he called him Your Highness. But what was Link a prince of? (Assuming he even was, assuming Rhoam wasn’t screwing with his head for Link’s disrespect). He wasn’t Prince of Hyrule, surely. Was he…not from Hyrule?

    It all made his head ache.

    “Zelda?” he asked aloud. “Was he serious?”

    There was no answer. Just the wind.

    Link grabbed the paraglider. He wouldn’t get any answers in these ruins. He needed to get off this plateau at last.

    He’d follow the slate. He’d find Impa.

    And then he’d find whoever gave him his locket.

    The tale had made her sad as a child. How awful it must be to be forcibly separated from someone you were sworn to protect. How dreadful to be denied half your duty, your destiny. 

    When Mio was Chosen as Impa, the story of the Sage of Shadow took on a more sinister feel, filling her with dread and anxiety. What if she couldn’t protect Zelda and Link? What if Calamity Ganon killed them? What if (Golden Three forbid) they fell to the Yiga Clan? What if they needed her and Impa wasn’t there? 

    But those were nonsensical worries, she told herself. She would always be there.

    Until she wasn’t.

    The Calamity came and brought ruin to all of Hyrule. Now Impa waits for Link to return, like her hero, the Sage of Shadow waited so long. She waits to fulfil her oaths, she waits for light to shine upon Hyrule once again.

    Or: Impa is a name and a title. The Guardian of the Gods, the most sacred title a Sheikah could have. What is it like to be separated from your Princess and Hero? Separated from your two dearest friends...It's a lucky thing Impa is so good at waiting.
