As Caleb reached one of the lesser used stairwells, he heard the shouts of what could only be Divergent and Factionless alike from his left. With an insane stroke of luck, it turned out that they were clearing another hallway, but likely not for long. He didn’t know how long it would take Beatrice to tell Four that he had ‘betrayed’ them, but he didn’t want to stick around to find out.
Caleb seeks freedom from the looming threat of punishment from bloodlusting Dauntless, as well as his own guilt. Guided towards the Wall, he begins to wonder if redemption is possible for a soul like him.

I couldn’t breathe, no matter how much I heaved, air seemed to fly right past me. The broken lands seemed to only crumble more as I fled. His voice echoed in my brain, unrecognizable and yet unmistakable at the same time. The pounding of my feet matched my heart. Almost in rhythm with the voice that screamed at me.

The reaction that followed was out of my control, my shoulders sagging and my breath hitching.
