In the Blooming Grove at the end of their adventure, Caleb and Beau sit down to put Caleb's recollections of his time as Ikithon's pupil on record, and Essek hears about the abuse he suffered for the first time.
Later that night, Essek interrupts Caleb's brooding, not really sure what his plan is, but unable to stay away any longer.

Ever since he had first sat in on one of Caleb’s lectures at the Soltryce Academy, Essek has been drawn to the way Caleb holds himself when he’s sharing the knowledge he has learned the hard way. There’s a confidence in Caleb that comes naturally to the surface. He is commanding, methodical, and takes care that those who are present get what they need from him.
Essek’s not sure he’s ever been more attracted to Caleb than when he first sat in the lecture hall trying to hide how he was lusting after Professor Widogast.

During a shopping trip in Rexxentrum, Essek is suddenly faced with the fact that he cannot outrun his past. With Caleb at his side, for once, Essek does not run. Instead, he returns to his towers in Rosohna to retrieve his notes and relive his past. There, Essek is forced to come to terms with how far he has come and how much further he has to go.

“He brought the light-damned book, by the way,” Verin says. Caleb starts, going rigid against Essek.
“Luxon’s balls, Verin! Not the time!"
Verin snaps something back in Undercommon—Caleb catches the words help and you. And something that would loosely translate to dipshit.
Maybe it’s simply the emotional whiplash, maybe it’s the joy that is having Essek in the home he’s built for them, but Caleb laughs. The laughter is as consuming and involuntary as the tears. Essek’s arms tighten around him, and Caleb reaches back, still hysterical.
“I can’t believe you’re here. I’m so glad you’re here.”
Essek presses new lips to Caleb’s temple.
“And I’ll stay for as long as you’ll have me.”
