“C’mon now, what’s this about?” he drawled. “Bit far in the woods for a ‘talk.’” A more suspicious member of the Mighty Nein--Beauregard, probably, or Nott herself--would’ve seen a threat in the way Nott had grabbed him and darted into the trees beside their campside, throwing a frantic ‘I need to talk to you!’ in their wake. Molly generally made an effort to assume the best of people, but he was also smarter than most gave him credit for. But while he was a little suspicious, he also knew that Nott was smarter than to kill him now after such an obvious display. If she wanted him dead, she would do it in the night without waking a soul.
Nott advanced, poking him in the soft of his stomach with a crooked claw, eyes narrowed as she glared up at him.
“What are your intentions with Caleb?” she demanded. Molly blinked at her for a moment before repressing a snort. Nott bared her teeth back at him.
Even when her friends don't know about her biological son, Nott can't help being a parent.

Summary
The Mighty Nein are very comfortable with one another, boundaries established and reconfigured and settled well before Essek finally joins them.
Casual touch is a given with them; proximity was a necessity for safety in their early days. This, however, stands in stark contrast with Essek’s many decades. Walls, barriers, layers, space. Separation kept Essek safe.
It’s not that he hates touch, no. It had simply grown unbearable after so long without. Unexpected or held for too long, it burned.
And then they won him over, slowly, over time, as they are wont to do. Rather, he is one of them now.

“Who did that to you?” Essek asks, voice nearly toneless. He tilts his own head, lifting up his left side, as if Caleb could possibly have missed his meaning.
Caleb swallows. Nods towards the one who’d done it.
“Ah, I see. A moment.” Then Essek looks away. Speaks again, in Undercommon, his words smooth and devoid of any emotion, with that knife slash of a smile still on his lips.
Then he lifts his hands, the absence of light appearing at his fingertips, and all hells break loose.
Essek hadn’t come alone after all—his new spell supersedes the Invisibility he had been holding over, well, most of the Nein. Yasha charges forward with a roar, Beau moving to flank, and Jester and Fjord explode in a fury of divine wrath. (Caleb, for his part, reaches for that campfire, stokes it into an explosion, drawing attention at those crucial first moments.)
But for all that, Caleb can’t take his eyes off Essek. He draws the fundamental forces of the universe like a harpist, like an archer, and he unmakes the man who’d struck Caleb before anyone else can reach him, unwinds him atom from atom, all while the smile never fades, while the cold never falters.

Summary
Mages can be utter bastards. Essek would know, being something of a bastard himself. But leaving a trap that can splinter a person's intellect, leaving them frightened and utterly helpless, one that would last for centuries, just waiting for an unlucky passerby? That's a particularly Aeoran kind of awful.
