Like you have brightened the room simply by existing in it. “Caleb.” He does not cross the room by magic, but a lesser man might have been fooled. Relax, when his arms circle you. Let him hold you. Relish the feeling of his ribs cycling against yours. He is— Gone. Here. Like a wish come true.

TagsSummaryOn a bright, summer morning, Essek Thelyss wakes to a knock at his door and a letter in his mailbox. It reads: “Dearest Essek,
Caleb and I have been considering your comment from the other day, when you told us you’d like to spend more time alone together. While the words you spoke were just that, your tone seemed to allude to something more. We are intrigued and wish to clarify just what you meant by that sentiment."

TagsSummary“I’ve always been lacking in the academic politics department,” Caleb says, “but you seem quite versed in that realm. It will be good to have you on my side.” Essek Thelyss is a postdoctoral fellow at Rosohna University dealing with his poor health and a recent data breech which sent the physics department reeling. When first year PhD student Caleb Widogast moves in across the street, Essek has to contend not only with Caleb's troubled past but with actions he himself has taken which threaten to destroy a growing bond.

TagsSummaryEssek is lucky to be alive. It can be hard to believe, with the scars he now bears. The Mighty Nein turned on him at the close of the war, and he barely escaped with his life. He defied fate to be here. At least, that is what Ludinus Da'leth told him, when he offered Essek shelter in exchange for his particular expertise. Essek's own recollection is— Fraught.

Touching Sentiments (Chronological) by Chanse (SpottedEnchants)Fandom: Critical Role: Exandria (Web Series)29 Aug 2025 SummaryThe Mighty Nein are very comfortable with one another, boundaries established and reconfigured and settled well before Essek finally joins them. Casual touch is a given with them; proximity was a necessity for safety in their early days. This, however, stands in stark contrast with Essek’s many decades. Walls, barriers, layers, space. Separation kept Essek safe. It’s not that he hates touch, no. It had simply grown unbearable after so long without. Unexpected or held for too long, it burned. And then they won him over, slowly, over time, as they are wont to do. Rather, he is one of them now. (Now in chronological order - posting order found here) - Words:

TagsSummaryLife as a fugitive is not kind, but Essek thought he had acclimated. And in many ways, he has. Still, there is only so much acclimating one can do once the assassins find you. Luckily, there is a favor to be repaid, and Caleb is happy to settle this debt in kind. (Direct sequel to bow shock.) Series- Part 2 of sun stained violence

TagsSummaryAdventuring might be behind Caleb, but danger is not. Late in the night, someone comes to settle a score with him on behalf of their mutual teacher. They did not account for Caleb playing host to someone with very strong opinions about that, and the magic to back them up. Series- Part 1 of sun stained violence

Bookmark Notes:“Who did that to you?” Essek asks, voice nearly toneless. He tilts his own head, lifting up his left side, as if Caleb could possibly have missed his meaning. Caleb swallows. Nods towards the one who’d done it. “Ah, I see. A moment.” Then Essek looks away. Speaks again, in Undercommon, his words smooth and devoid of any emotion, with that knife slash of a smile still on his lips. Then he lifts his hands, the absence of light appearing at his fingertips, and all hells break loose. Essek hadn’t come alone after all—his new spell supersedes the Invisibility he had been holding over, well, most of the Nein. Yasha charges forward with a roar, Beau moving to flank, and Jester and Fjord explode in a fury of divine wrath. (Caleb, for his part, reaches for that campfire, stokes it into an explosion, drawing attention at those crucial first moments.) But for all that, Caleb can’t take his eyes off Essek. He draws the fundamental forces of the universe like a harpist, like an archer, and he unmakes the man who’d struck Caleb before anyone else can reach him, unwinds him atom from atom, all while the smile never fades, while the cold never falters.

TagsSummaryMages can be utter bastards. Essek would know, being something of a bastard himself. But leaving a trap that can splinter a person's intellect, leaving them frightened and utterly helpless, one that would last for centuries, just waiting for an unlucky passerby? That's a particularly Aeoran kind of awful. Whumptober 2021 inspired fic for the following prompt:

Bookmark Notes:"Jester, my dear, could you perhaps resurrect someone who is quite dead? I have a bone to pick, as you say, then a very upsetting murder to commit." "How dead? And how upsetting?" Jester asks, a little distractedly. "Almost a millennium, likely, and deeply, I'm afraid." Caleb barks a laugh and finally looks at Essek. That sharpness, the bright intelligence Essek prizes and cherishes is back. "No, no, my friend, I call dibs." Essek huffs a watery chuckle and makes a sweeping, deferential gesture. "Anything you like."

TagsSummary“I know we haven’t really talked about it— lately…” Caleb said slowly, trying to work his mouth around the idea his brain hadn’t quite processed. “But… a family. Do you want one?” Caleb heard the knife pause on the cutting board. He would have bet his most prized tome that Molly was twirling the blade nervously in his fingers. “A family can be two men, five cats, and a dozen friends wandering in and out,” Molly said carefully. “And if it should include children?”

TagsSummaryThe first letter Essek receives from Caleb Widogast is secreted into his pocket at some point during a tense interview with the Bright Queen. For the life of him, Essek cannot figure out how it was done. He doesn’t recall so much as brushing against the other man as he escorted the Mighty Nein out of the Lucid Bastion. Yet when he returns to his office, there it is, tucked into a nearly invisible pocket in his mantle — a piece of subpar parchment folded to vaguely resemble a cat’s face with tiny pointed ears. - Language:
