Behind Katniss, Gale rolls his eyes, “It’s not as though you’ll be going to the Capitol,” He says, back on script, “How many slips do you have, five? Six? I had more than that when I was twelve.”
“You shouldn’t have,” Madge says, and she means it, “Nobody should. This shouldn’t be a situation we have to deal with. No child deserves to die.”
Gale furrows his brows, shocked into silence. Katniss looks equally stunned and they perform the rest of their business in silence, trading a basket full of strawberries for Madge’s customary over-payment.
“It’s going to be okay,” Madge says with certainty as the two turn to leave her garden, “Good luck.”
As they walk away, Madge feels both outside of herself and also present in a way she hasn’t in years and she knows with absolute clarity why she is here, what she is meant to do. She’s not used to having direction or control and it feels good, she feels like the sort of capable person she’s always wanted to be. She feels like maybe she can fix something.

“I could just put an arrow in your back while you’re walking away,” Katniss said quietly. “Wait out the others.”
Clove turned around, holding her arm close to her side as Katniss had instructed her to. Despite everything—the sling, the blood—she moved with a kind of savage elegance, like she hadn’t heard a word of the threat. She didn’t look back, like she wasn’t afraid of anything Katniss might do.
“I’m waiting,” she said, vanishing into the trees like she already knew Katniss would follow.
