Summary
Chai has a rather tumultuous history when it came to people wanting him to stick around, and he's never quite sure how much of it was directly his fault. If you were to ask him personally, he would probably say most of it was his fault. He was Chai: a loud-brained rockstar who didn't even have the ability to be a rockstar until recently. Occasionally, he thought certain aspects of it were unfair, at least when it came to specific details of specific moments, but for the most part, he did his best to shake it off and make a mental note of what not to do the next time he found himself settling down with those he considered family.
He for sure had to have everything figured out by now. He knew the formulas and expectations for when it came to people like him. He couldn't possibly mess it up like he had done so many times before, not with all that he knew after his copious amounts of trial and error.

Chai decided to go in a Big Hole and is now suffering the consequences. Meanwhile, Peppermint is going through her own crisis about having found her true family while searching for her mother, yada yada yada. It's a lot, but she's more concerned about when her chow mein is gonna show up.
In short, Chai gets hurt and Peppermint patches him up. It doesn't get much simpler than that, folks!

As it turns out, Chai's core, his heart in essence, isn't exactly as stable as thought. Maybe 'defective' wasn't too far off, though certainly not deserving a death sentence. It's not really a shock how far people are willing to go to help him.
Or how he's willing to help them.
