Summary
After war and pollution pummeled the Earth, the humans went underground to try and survive. After 20 years in the sanctuary the people have thrived from technology and a unique community system. They are ruled by chancellors; Lance's mom is one of them. Alfor, the main chancellor and the reason the sanctuary exists, assigns the jobs to young adults that they must work the rest of their lives. When Lance is assigned as a paladin, his entire world is flipped upside down. He learns that the chancellors have lied to the citizens in the sanctuary for 20 years.

Summary
“Keith...” His voice is low and quiet, trying to bring down the tension in otherwise such a still, old room.
However, his attempt is futile, and Keith yanks his metal hand away and turns away, looking over his shoulder with a hurt glare, “Don’t touch me!” He lashes out, his lips downturned. “Not after you just did...” His voice got quieter, but not any less sharp.
The room is silent as they stare at each other, both their chests rising and falling as dust becomes visible from the window where a ray of sun goes through the room and cuts a line between them.

Lance makes a stupid decision which almost kills him and Keith is mad at him. Then Keith cries. They hug each other and apologize before comforting each other.

Wiping away his tears while still coughing, Lance turned to Keith. He was trapped with his hands behind his back while being used as a shield, lowering the gun slightly. His eyes locked with the Samurai’s, he nodded his head once. Lance immediately raised his hands again, coughing as he aimed. The burn in his eyes was not relenting as it blurred his vision so much that the two bodies merged into the same blurry blob. “Take the fuckin’ shot, Lance!” The voice yelled knowing that Lance was hesitating. Lance trusted that voice too much for his own good. Not sure who he was aimed at, Lance pulled the trigger.

Summary
Long ago on a mission Keith went missing, and only reappeared years later after the war with a half robot body.
Since then Lance is actually dying with only a year left to live, but Keith sells himself in the name of science to help pay for surgery, even if that involves something much like torture.

Lance knew about the dangers of the AI. Knew what they were capable of, and how many lives they had destroyed. So when he's met face to face with one named Keith, he knows what he should do. He knows he should turn and walk the other way.
But that's a lot harder when Keith is all too human - something textbooks and stories couldn't have prepared Lance for.
