Atanas nie prosił się o zmiany, ale one nastąpiły niezależnie od niego. Zachodziły cicho, zawarte w przeciągających się spojrzeniach i milczących korytarzach. Czasem przychodziły w snach, a czasem ukazywały się w lustrach, odbijających go trochę inaczej niż wczoraj. Nowe miejsce, nowe zasady, nowe nazwiska wypowiadane z pełnym pustej uprzejmości niezrozumieniem.
Odkąd pamiętał, cenił porządek. Schematy dawały mu złudzenie kontroli, a system był prosty i zrozumiały. Nie wszystko jednak dało się wpasować w kolumny. Nie wszystko mieściło się w marginesach. A gdy coś zaczynało wymykać się z ram, które znał, tracił grunt pod nogami.
Niektórych rzeczy nie da się poukładać. Nie da się ujarzmić uczuć, które zmieniają kształt, zanim zdoła się je nazwać. Czasem wystarczy jedno ukradkowe spojrzenie, jeden gest, by przypomnieć sobie, kim się jest.
