Summary
It was an illness that could've been avoided easily, if David would've just guarded his heart more closely. Still, he found himself hacking up the contents of his aching lungs in an uncomfortably cramped alleyway with thoughts of Jack Kelly clouding his head, and he realized that there really wasn't any coming back from this. He'd made a mistake and his life was totally and completely ruined over a boy who'd never spare him a second glance.
It was almost laughable, how much David loved Jack. He was a pathetic mess over the boy, with tiny blue flower petals stuck to his lips and chin, and visions of deep brown eyes swimming through his mind. David was lovelorn. Really and truly lovesick.

He also knows the dizziness dropped and turned into a wave of lightheadedness, his loss of senses had been progressing throughout the day, but it quickly ramped up as his family was sat around the table for dinner, and before he knew it, the tight grasp that feeling of “something isn’t right” had on his chest let go as suddenly as David’s consciousness did.
This is a prequel to a multi-chaptered fic I'm writing at the moment. The fainting condition isn't necessarily the main focus, but whatever I started writing this to get inspiration for that and liked it enough

David Jacobs was not a particularly impulsive individual. He'd had the same best friend since the third grade (Jack Kelly), been in love with said best friend since freshman year, and was perfectly happy with pining silently until the day he died, so long as things remained the same. Senior year rolled around, and the aforementioned best friend got a girlfriend. New relationships toss David and Jack's relationship into turmoil, and David finds that the consequences of acting before thinking can be unfortunately extreme.

Something deep inside him told David that it was manipulation. Children were already easy to manipulate, let alone a kid like Les. He was stubborn, but loyal to a fault. When Jack started signing with him, that was an open invitation for Les to decide he was good no matter how many times David and Sarah explained that knowing sign language doesn’t make them a good person. Somehow, Les still hadn’t fully accepted that.
David couldn’t blame him too much. The kid lived in a world where people overwhelmingly thought of him like a pet more than a child and he’d never gotten to experience the deaf school back home. Les had never experienced the ability to just live–if someone had taken the time to learn an extra language and communicate with him, they were on his side. While it was a nice idea and the last thing anyone wanted Les to do was grow up quicker, it wasn’t true and he’d get hurt sooner or later.
David just had a feeling that ‘later’ would come sooner with Jack in the picture.

The important part is the fact that they had made a promise, swore to each other, a damn oath, not to lie nor hide things from each other. The two of them were supposed to tell each other everything. And sure, Sarah may have kept a few secrets from Davey over the years such as who stole her last piece of chocolate or the real names of her crushes. However, Sarah had never acted so blatantly secretive as Davey had been doing for the past couple months. So obviously hiding something.
