At age sixty-seven Arthur is ordered to go into the time machine to the past in be a beggar for the future. If the peoples of the past can make a few different choices, everyone's lives will be better. He becomes the Diplomat from the Future. He works with Envision, an environmental org., and is busy, but lonely. His friend Layla Nazeri takes him to visit her Baha'i family in Vancouver, B.C., where he meets her widowed aunt, Pari. Arthur and Pari fall in love, they marry, and then they have to figure out what that means for the rest of their lives as he is a diplomat and sometimes she is Mrs. Diplomat.
This multi-chapter story is meant to be a romance. Occasionally, other characters from The Ministry of Time will stop by.

Graham shifts in his chair, eyes fixed on Henry and Edward at the far end of the table. A low, unwilling grunt slips out. Thirty seconds should be enough for Henry to lift his mouth from Edward’s neck—or at least draw a breath—but he feeds from Little like a leech. Not that Graham is counting.

Graham Gore, first lieutenant of Erebus and one of several designated milk producers for the Franklin Expedition- which is not doing so well on a whole, Graham would be the first to admit- has been kidnapped by mutineers. Much like the Admiralty before them, they only really want Graham for his breastmilk. Hickey wants to keep Graham for himself- the strong, jovial Graham Gore is a prize to stroke his ego. But he is distracted with managing a camp of mutineers and his dreams of godhood. Graham goes without milking for too long, until another mutineer is assigned to help him out.

“Em hmm,” John eloquently replied, before tipping sideways and hitting the wall with his upper body and a loud thump.
George giggled loudly, prompting Edward to shush him as he helped John stand up straight. John also made a shushing noise, though doubtless he was too drunk to understand why, and it ended up being louder than George’s laughter.

John is sick of all of them. Of the rum drinkers, and the rum makers, the shop owners and farmers. He can’t stand the officers of the law in their uniforms; not least to say of the natives who occasionally descend on town. It’s awful. What should be Autumn is instead coming with a return of heat, and the closest to leaves changing colour is the wattle trees yellowing with bloom.
Even with reasonable weather, the sheep he tends have no interest in growing wool of good quality. This is in spite of any attempts to buy grass seed or improve the fields, which instead seem to only serve in fattening the wombats and kangaroos who laze around. Goulburn seems to be the place for lazing around. Despite the growing township, there’s a dearth of those who want to work hard. Even convicts, on their sentences of hard labour, seem to be more interested in eyeing the few women in town or drinking than in the work through which they will earn the right to society once more.
