“Hal?” Barry breaks the silence. He looks surprised but also unsure. He takes a tentative step forward, but then stops, and Hal can tell he barely recognizes him with the heavy green armor and cape he wears, and with the decade of age that has deepened the lines of his face and painted the hair at his temples white. Hal, fearful that Barry too will see him as some kind of monster and not the same honest, decent man he’s always been and is desperately trying to prove he still is, wills himself into his regular civilian jeans, t-shirt, and jacket. It’s a form he doesn’t take all that often anymore, and the weight of his regular clothes feel strangely unfamiliar on his body.
“Hi, Barry,” Hal swallows, voice breaking when he says Barry’s name. God, it’s been so long since he’s said Barry’s name.

Well, the day is finally here and Barry’s starting to worry that him being in charge of such an important family event wasn’t such a great idea. Sure, his kitchen counters have piles of food packages for dishes that he’s meticulously planned out, and okay, he has checked the grill twice a day for the last week to ensure it’s still in working order, and yeah, he took care to read countless blogs and books on hosting the perfect family barbeque. But his overactive brain keeps overthinking every little thing that might go wrong to the point where it’s starting to implode, and now he’s wondering if they should have asked Jay and Joan to host instead.
He’s already committed this year, though, and at the very least Barry is going to try his hardest to keep it from being a total disaster. Or worse, boring. Barry feels very lucky, then, that Hal is earthside and available to lend a hand.

He turned back to his scrubbing. The bottle of hydrogen peroxide Barry kept precisely for these occasions was almost empty. Hal would have sped over to the store for a new one if he were more confident he wouldn’t slam into a wall on the way because he was too distracted. He also didn’t want to leave Barry alone to do something stupid, like drown in his own bathtub because he forgot he was injured and not supposed to move.
“Seriously, Hal, leave it. I’ll take care of it after,” insisted Barry, “CSI remember? I know how to clean off blood – ”
“Bar, if I see you move even a single finger – ”

Barry leaned back, tilting his head against the wall. Hal was momentarily distracted by the long line of his neck, until the soft, cool feel of a construct brushed under his chin, pulling his gaze back up to meet Barry’s.“Join me?” asked Barry.
In a blink, Hal crossed the small bathroom and knelt next to the tub. Barry snickered at his surprise, so Hal flicked water at his face in retaliation, but quickly caught Barry’s good hand, entangling their fingers together before it evolved into a full tussle. In a moment of weakness, he kissed his knuckles, causing a light static shock to jump between them, pulsing in tandem with the ring.
They were lucky. They were familiar enough with each others’ powers that using them during the fight against the bizarro Justice League had been no hardship. Hal couldn’t help the swell of pride at Barry’s ease with the constructs – even if he stuck close to the ground most of the time. Even the speed force seemed to mostly keep itself in check and Hal’s hopeless romantic side liked to think it was because it knew him.
This situation was weird, and Hal didn’t like it, but they were doing just fine.
“As soon as the food gets here,” he promised.

Barry sighed contently and practically melted against him, completely unbothered as Hal cracked open the takeout boxes over his head. He drew the line when Hal tried feeding him, however, and pushed his hand away.“Eat, before you faint on me,” he ordered.
Barry ran a hand along Hal’s bent knee and only then did Hal caught on to the slight shake of his limbs. At Barry’s insistence, he’d had a snack already – if a full bowl of leftover pasta could be called a snack – barely an hour ago and yet he was starving. He bowed over his food and inhaled the freshly cooked scent of couscous. Right on cue, his stomach growled loud enough to be heard from OA.
“I am never teasing you about your metabolism again,” he swore.
“Don’t make promises you don’t intend to keep,” said Barry.

He smiled when Hal rose and eyebrow at him and closed his eyes to focus. Then his entire body blurred for a beat and when he stilled and Hal was able to properly see him again, Barry looked… different. He blinked. Barry’s features were rounder and softer. Most of his frown lines were smoothed out, baby hairs curled around his ears and even light acne spotted along his chin. Barry stood and twirled around once and it confirmed in Hal’s mind what his eyes were seeing: Barry looked younger now, matching Hal in age.“You can do that?” he gasped.
“Just a little something I picked up from Bart,” said Barry, “now we can still go on a date.”
