Summary
Jason tries to find some semblance of balance by striking out on his own as a mercenary, far away from Gotham and any of its Bats. He tries to find himself along the way too, figuring out a life without begging for their love.
He doesn't expect to find Hal Jordan in the process. Over and over again, until together, they find a lot more and Jason learns love doesn't have to come with rules. And more importantly, it doesn't have to hurt.
Or: the five times Jason ran into Hal while he was working, and the one time he found the bravery to call for Hal.

“It means,” Hal continues, and Dick braces himself for the news. “That Jason is likely alive.” He stares at the younger man and hums again. “You can’t tell your — Bruce of this conversation, and you mustn’t meddle in matters concerning the dead any further.”
Dick opens his mouth to argue that he will absolutely be meddling in it — his brother is alive — when Hal raises a hand to quiet him.
“Jason’s not a dead person.” he simply says and turns around to the window. “It is not my business whether you meddle with matters concerning your brother, he is not dead any longer.”

The Spectre's newest host, former Green Lantern Hal Jordan, secretly visits the Watchtower, thinking he has the place to himself. Unfortunately, his ex-coworker thinks the same.
“Bruce?”
Bruce stiffens in his chair at the sound of the voice. The constant echoing of his name means it can only be one person.
“Jordan,” he growls out, standing from his chair. He hovers one hand over a weapon at his belt, ready to incapacitate the man if he makes a move. “Spectre,” he corrects himself. Hal Jordan is dead and has been for a long time. “What the hell are you doing here?”

“There’re people who love you, too,” Hal says, his voice slightly wavering. “People who would do… anything. Anything to have you back with them.”
Hal pushes back the hood on his head, letting it pool around his neck and shoulders, and Barry can see his entire face, from the deep frown tugging at his eyebrows and lips to the despair glimmering in his eyes. The years of compounded grief that, even in death, has left him looking aged and worn. Barry’s heart begins to ache.
“I know,” Barry says softly.
