This is false, of course. Hob and Death have said many things to each other. He considers her the best of his immortal friends. She knows it perfectly well, too.
But this isn't what she's referring to.
"Do you miss him?"
Does Hob miss Morpheus?
"Every damn day," he responds, leaning forward to refill their drinks.

1989. Hob waits for his Stranger, but he never come. Hob could give up, he could wait until 2089 and pretend that nothing happened, but instead, he writes to him, just in case his Stranger came the next day, or the day after.
2089. His Stranger is still missing. Hob writes again, because it's better than giving up. It starts a new tradition. Every century he writes to tell his Stranger of his love for humanity and for life. He writes about his fears, his hopes, and also, perhaps, if you read between the lines, of his love for him.
But after centuries, the question still needs to be ask. Where is his stranger, and how long can Hob cope without him? -

However, he never fully communicated this to the nightmare in question and The Corinthian thinks he's just Dream's favored newest creation and fears the day he no longer favors him.
So when The Corinthian learns that Dream meets someone on a regular basis every 100 years he goes to follow one time.
He didn't mean to blow his cover but when you see your lord and lover being attacked in a pub you step in you know?
Hob's just glad for another hint on what his stranger is.

The Dreaming stands, but Dream... Dream is gone.
In the aftermath of the assault on the Dreaming, the Kindly Ones delivered their judgement, their punishment - for spilling blood - and yet, Dream is gone... but not yet returned. Death does not understand why. Endless remain... and yet Dream... is just gone.
Only because the Kindly Ones did not take his life that day. No. It's not much of a punishment if it was what he craved most.
No, instead, they trap him in an unending nightmare - living the moment he killed his son over and over again. Until he breaks, until he begs, until the end of time - Dream doesn't know. He just knows there's no escape. There's no help coming. He's alone.
And every day that he kills his son - just to wash the blood away again and again... He desires for this to end, he would beg for death, he wallows in despair, and he worries he's becoming delirious. Hob struggles to try to get himself into the tavern in 1689.
And he would have been thrown out immediately if it weren't for the stranger that was waiting for him. His skin glowed in the dim fire, and Hob felt like a tiny insect darting into those flames, after having not felt any warmth for so damn long.

Yet another take on the Hob-rescues-Dream-from-fishbowl scenario, but in this case it's a look at the aftermath.
Post-rescue Dream is extremely weak and can't access his powers properly, nor the Dreaming. He stays with Hob to recuperate. Lots of cuddling because Dream is touch-starved, Hob playing nurse, and both friends realizing *feels* slow burn style.
Also. Hob thinks Dream is way too proud for someone who needed the TLC of a toddler. And if no one else is going to take Dream down a notch, it's up to him.
