Summary

PJ forces the club the play Secret Santa and has to confront her feelings in the process.

“Suit yourself,” Hazel says through her kettle corn. She wasn’t about to get between PJ and her own thoughts. Her eyes wander as they climb upwards, taking in the rest of the fair and the speckled dots of people spread throughout. “You think there’s better out there for us?”
PJ’s briefly caught off guard, twisting her rings around her fingers, and she looks anywhere but Hazel. “I mean, yeah, there’s gotta be, right?” She shrugs. “There’s always hotter, more attractive, you know, fitter.”
“You just said the exact same thing three fucking times,” Hazel points out, but it’s more of an afterthought, her mind on the meaning behind PJ’s words. It’s shallower than a tub of Krogers Vanilla ice cream, and usually, that doesn’t bother Hazel, but right now, it does. Maybe, it’s the weed, maybe it’s the Maybelline clear mascara Brittany insists she uses to corral her ‘less than ideal’ eyebrows, but she scowls, her knee bouncing as she starts to talk. “What about kinder? Nicer? Maybe people who share more principles in common with you?”
PJ scoffs, but it doesn’t feel like her heart’s in it. “That stuff doesn’t matter. You know that.”

“Do you want to kiss PJ?” Isabel asks abruptly then, and internally Hazel can only hear her own screaming. She swallows hard.
“Uh, I don’t know. I’ve never thought about it.” Hazel lies, right through her teeth. This is a nightmare. “I— Even if I did, I think we’ve established that I wouldn’t know what to do anyways so maybe we should just— drop it, maybe—”
“Do you want to know what to do?” Isabel asks then. Just like that. Like Hazel is supposed to know even a little of what that means.
“... What do you mean by that?” Hazel asks in confusion, turning a bit more in her seat to face Isabel.
She’s got two braids in the front of her hair again and they frame her face perfectly. Hazel finds herself distracted by that, at least until Isabel says, “Do you want to practice?”
“Practice what?” Hazel blurts out in sheer lack of understanding, giving Isabel a look of growing confusion that she seems to almost flush a bit under.
Isabel shrugs, “Kissing.”

Why would Stella post a pic of Hazel with her parents? Pj looked at the bio and fucking gasped.

Pj scrolled though more of the pictures and none of them had her smiling for real. Pj was so confused. Why did she look so miserable? Why didn’t Hazel tell her it was a party for her birthday?

Stella’s eyes are suddenly very wide.
“And that’s an epic save by number eleven, Rockbridge Falls’ goalie, Hazel fucking Callahan!” The announcer calls over the speakers, and Hazel beams up towards the booth with that same breathless smile, eyes shining with excitement.
“Oh.” Stella is suddenly able to get out then as the rest of the team begins to rush their way toward Hazel in elation at the victory.
Brittany glances over at Stella coolly despite the chaotic commotion of it all. Her brow arches. “Oh?”
Stella Rebecca can only blink as she watches Hazel’s grin under the force of Sylvie’s noogie, as she sees her laughing through bloodied teeth and grappling with their friends and— Stella blinks again before she’s turning and beaming at Brittany in pleasant surprise. “I think I’m gay.”
Brittany stares at Stella for a long time before she blinks. She shakes her head as if to clear it, and when that doesn’t work, she simply responds. “What?”
