He was not proud of what he had done. Regret was now his constant companion, as was shame. Intimacy with anyone other than his wife was cheap, shallow…unworthy to be compared to the true, deep devotion shared with the woman who was his equal in life. He had no excuse to offer Demelza, however. Words were useless, futile…particularly when everything, including his heart and mind, were so torn asunder by his actions.
