Summary
The best time to go out is in the early evening, in the two hours he has between the matinee and the evening show. Summer has long crossed into autumn, and he finds it easier to go on his walks when it’s dark so much of the time. He’d started to get recognised some places in the daylight, and he’s quickly found out it’s his least favourite thing right now. Everything happened recently enough that people want to mention it, but long enough ago that they feel awkward and change their minds halfway through.

“It’s a little obvious,” Jones says, reclining back in the bed — one leg propped up, the other tucked underneath the bridge of his knee. “Isn’t it? The play, I mean.”
They play this game fairly often.
“Go on, then.” Conrad, mid-shave, taps his razor off in a dish of warm water.
“Your mother died,” Jones posits. “You miss your mother.”
Conrad turns to regard him with a puzzled expression.
“That isn’t it at all,” he says. “My mother’s not dead.”

Summary
He shouldn’t have thought it at all, because it’s the most he’s acknowledged any of this all day, all those guys in the back of his head, lined up, drinking, laughing, dying, breathing in the dark. He loves Conrad, because he puts Jones’ thoughts into words without even knowing they’re his thoughts. He hates him a little bit, because he didn’t ask to be known like that.
or: It is 1959. Jones is briefly, painfully, forced to remember that he once fought in a war.
