None of that matters when Anna Maria doesn’t mean the same thing to the twins; it can’t mean the same thing to them not really, not when they don’t have the same warm memories here that he has or the desperate hope that maybe everything will always be okay, as long as they stay where they are.
The twins still get to share in his warm memories though; Nadia gets to spend her time in the ocean she loves so much and Jason gets a rare moment to just exist for himself, something Lucas quietly suspects he hasn’t gotten since they were old enough to share the beach towels.
There’s a calmness to Jason on the beach that Lucas isn’t used to seeing. He doesn’t think he saw it when they were kids, back when he and Jason both moved at a mile a minute with no one else to entertain them, back when Jason let himself ramble about nothing in particular and Nadia would talk right back to them; before their parents scared it out of them.

this was inspired by that fic where peter and jeremy are cousins (i will confess that i didn't read it because i didn't want to be sad about how bare ended). and my brain was like "this? this is an interesting concept, we can use this." and now i'm here. this is a group chat fic for this au which is like a crossover of bare: a pop opera, be more chill, and dear evan hansen. it starts at the beginning of year 11 (10th grade). and continues until i get bored? i guess? so it'll continue for a long time.
