Summary
Daniel Jacobi wakes up one day with a voice in his head that tells him he used to be an astronaut. This voice, though she claims she used to be a real person and a dear friend of his, has no evidence of existing.
And yet, running into an old- friend? Colleague? Coworker? Whatever- might provide the push he needs to finally dig into why his all-too-fuzzy memory is the way it is.

Summary
“We promised we wouldn’t be back,” Jacobi points out.
“I know.”
“You said we put them through enough already.”
“I know.”
“Now we’re going back in, and it’s- it’s because we might have fucked up really badly.”
“Yeah. I know.”
“You know.” Jacobi doesn’t look satisfied. “Do you have nothing else to say?”
“I don’t think we should let them wait,” Kepler says. “Be careful in there, Jacobi. I really don’t want to fish you out of this machine again.”
Jacobi’s eyes are worried, but he nods. “Technically, you’ve never fished me out of this machine, sir.”

Summary
Mr. Cutter pulls out a small book, one that is fraying in every direction and dimension possible, covered in dust (somehow) with a cover that reads ‘Flirtations for the Dashing Gentleman’. He then opens it, thumbing through the pages before he lets out a delighted ‘Ah-ha!’. Then he turns to you, reciting what he reads as if he’s a kindergartener in their first school play.
“Wow. This one is good.” He says more to himself than you, “Are you from Tennessee?” He pauses a long moment, as if waiting for you to confirm or deny. You don’t. He continues, “Because you’re the only ten I see.”

Summary
Where Kepler had half-expected to see some monster out of a fairy-tale, stood Cutter exactly as he had been a few seconds ago. He knew that this was worse, that no monster from any story could even begin to cast a shadow on Cutter, who stood there with that same friendly grin and that same mischievous spark in his eye. This was the face that would haunt his nightmares if he allowed himself to dream.
“I just wanted to remind you that our friend Daniel belongs to me.”

Summary
In the moments before Maxwell dies, she sees her family. Her real family. And then she dies with her head held high and her teeth bared.
In the moments before Kepler dies, he sees his team, his family. All those little moments they had seen through the cracks in his masks because they were the only people he had ever felt truly safe around. And then he dies with whiskey in his hands and no air in his lungs, thinking of them.
Jacobi doesn’t die, not for a long time at least. But every story has to come to an end, so, when he does, he smiles.
