Effie is pregnant and it's Haymitchs. His friendship is too dear to her, and she knows with him off alcohol in District 13, he wouldn't have anything to sink into and would easily push her away.
She keeps her distance dispute herself, but still misses him and he misses her too
He accidentally finds out she's pregnant BC he was hugging her cos she couldn't stop crying and he's mean to her.
It isn't until Katniss goes to him covered in blood thinking somethings wrong with both Effie and baby that he realises how much more it will hurt if he looses them both.

I never planned on telling this story—mostly because I figured no one in their right mind would want front-row seats to the ugliness inside my head.
