Summary
Attending ParkCiv High wasn't for the weak. In order to survive, you had to abide by what was expected of your social group. Even being at the very top meant that eyes were constantly on you, and more importantly, those bitter at the bottom were waiting for you to slip up and fall down to their layer. Not that Evbo knew anything about being anywhere near the top of ParkCiv's social hierarchy, though he'd certainly dreamed of somehow managing to rise the ranks, despite it never having been done before.
It isn't until he's tasked to observe social dynamics and is paired up by default with a classmate he's never met before (and soon realises he can't stand) that he both finally discovers the truth to ranking up, and how, maybe, being at the top wasn't nearly as fun as it looked from the bottom.

Teddy was no miracle worker—but he holds him up against the wall, presses him into it in the way he knows hurts his spine, tells him all these insulting phrases that Evbo drinks up from his lips anyways; his stomach warms up from the harsh treatment, and it's something almost like love.
It's not like Evbo even knew what he wanted existed out here, but this was pretty damn close.
