But a piece of Newt is there, really, and Thomas likes finding them in a sip of Gally’s alcohol, or a bite of Frypan’s food, or the quirk in Sonya’s smile. His favorite one to find is every morning, when his hand trails to his chest to wrap around the piece of metal hanging there on his necklace. He used to pull it out and read it every time he remembered it was there, compulsively, but he was getting better with that. He memorized it all anyway. A piece of Newt, rattling around in his head.

.There’s no way to describe the light that fills him when he has Newt in his arms again. Or maybe it’s Newt that is the light, settling the dark storms in Thomas’s head.

(...) His jaw aches and he says nothing, silently accepts it, because he’s ached his whole life and this is the first time it’s been beautiful. He has ran from everyone and everything until his muscles gave out, but this time, the reason that Newt’s heartbeat is pulsing in his fingertips isn’t because he’s been running for his life. His life, his Tommy, is right here, and finally, there is nothing to run from.
“I love you,” Thomas says, breathlessly, like Newt pulled it from him, like he didn’t even have to think to say it.
It’s mercy, finally.

.Two weeks later, Newt does not need another injection. He never does feel the dizzy sway again, except when Thomas buries his face in his neck or kisses him when there’s people around. Newt has a new infection now: love.
