What a wonderful place to execute the downfall of one’s family, Laurent thought, his fingers trembling slightly, as he pushed back his damp fringe and shielded his eyes from the glaring sun. It was the only way Laurent had been able to convince himself to go back to the place he had sworn he would never set foot in ever again.

Laurent didn't know what to expect from the new slave he had bought but that certainly wasn't it. For years he had imagined himself killing Kastor for his brother's death and in his most childish dreams, before his death was known, he even thought of taking revenge by killing Kastor's brother himself, so that he would suffer the same.
In his mind Damianos was a huge barbarian warrior, not unlike Kastor, who killed without a care in the world.
Of course, he was aware that Damianos was only two months older than him and that, although he had participated in the war just like him, he wasn't as a general or on the front line.
Still he always pictured him as strong, a warrior.
The man who was kneeling in front of him, with his eyes fixed on the ground, was totally different from what he imagined.
Or
Damen, who is the same age as Laurent, is captured by veretians soldiers shortly before the end of the war and delivered to the Regent as a slave.

"It brings me no joy to have to resort to such measures," Lord de Vere says. The wine has stained his mouth blood-red. He dabs at it with a napkin. "But the older my nephew grows, the harder it becomes to ignore his… affliction."
Damen hums in vague agreement. "You mentioned a curse in your letter."
The missive arrived not a fortnight ago at the inn he was staying at. The messenger held it in his hands with something not unlike reverence and seemed unwilling to part with the parchment as Damen went to take it from him. The elder de Vere, it would appear, is well-liked in these parts.
The same cannot be said for his nephew.
"I'm sure you're aware of the Curse of the Black Sun," Lord de Vere says, quietly. His eyes wander the room as though he's making sure no one is around to hear. "My nephew was born on that unfortunate night, twenty years past."

Laurent has been proclaimed dead in Vere, his latest countermove against The Regent—now King—landing him on a ship to Ios to serve as pet and peace offering to the Akielon Crown, to serve the prince Damianos, his brother's killer. The gambit given by his uncle should have been simple, his life in secrecy or Damianos' death by his hand as he had always wanted. But being saved by said prince from attempted murder has made things complicated. Perhaps if Laurent can assuage the unrest of the Akielon courtiers as they await the death of the king, prevent war between the kingdoms, and ensure Damianos' succession, perhaps if Damianos can learn they will both make it out of this alive. Or perhaps the consequence will be greater than either of them were bargaining for.

Laurent wakes screaming. He’s dying. He must be. It’s the only explanation he has for the utter agony, confusion and terror that he feels. His brain is splitting itself open, bits of it strewn across space and time. He’s twenty one, in Arles, finally crowned. He’s fourteen, at Chastillon, on his knees for his uncle. He’s twenty, in Ios, watching a blade sink into Damen’s side. He’s sixteen, all alone, dreaming of revenge.
Last night Laurent had thrust his arm at Damen, “attend me,” he had commanded, as if Damen weren’t a king in his own right. Last night, Uncle had sat on his bed, played chess with him. “I will always have time for you,” he had reassured Laurent, “even though Auguste has outgrown you.”
Laurent leans to the side and vomits, violently. His fingers shake as he pushes his hair back, slowly, the room spins into focus. His hair is shorter than he remembers, Damen likes it long. His hair is exactly the same, cut by his nursemaid once a month.
He is thirteen, at Marlas, and he knows everything.
