"You had one job," Lu Guang says, flicking the portable cooktop’s switch off with a calmness that is, frankly, infuriating.
"I got distracted, okay?" Cheng Xiaoshi protests, waving a plate like a shield. The toast is charcoal.
Lu Guang eyes it, then eyes Cheng Xiaoshi. "By what?"
"You," Cheng Xiaoshi says instantly, without thinking. Then flushes bright red.
The silence that follows feels like falling—not down, but inward.

Day 3 — secret | work gig | book
The cabin sways faintly. Each movement makes their knees bump, barely, like the ride is trying to push them closer.
Cheng Xiaoshi shifts to face him fully. “You’re really okay with this?”
“With the ride?”
“With today. With me.”
Lu Guang’s eyes linger on his. There’s a pause before he answers. “You’re loud. You talk too much. You eat like a feral raccoon.”
“Is that a yes?”
Lu Guang doesn’t smile, but something gentler rests in the corner of his mouth. “It’s not a no.”
in which Lu Guang keeps a secret, Cheng Xiaoshi walks into it by accident, and what follows is a photoshoot, an amusement park "date," and a night that lingers a little too long.

Summary
He mentally tells himself to ask Lu Guang how the book ends when he wakes up because he finds he’s invested in the love story being read to him. It’s dramatic and unrealistic in a way that had him holding his breath to see how it would turn out. If he hadn’t ended up down in the subway fighting for his life with Lu Guang, both of them landing in the hospital with should-be fatal wounds, he would never believe that something like this could happen. But if there was one thing he had learned with absolute certainty, it was that anything could happen, especially where love was concerned.
The lengths people would go to in order to protect the person they love most are unfathomable, and Cheng Xiaoshi knows that first hand now.
He falls asleep thinking about fighting dragons for Lu Guang, and glass slippers.

Day 1 — watch | rain | pet
Cheng Xiaoshi appears in the hall, completely drenched. A hoodie clings to him like it is trying to crawl off his body. His hair is plastered to his forehead, and in his arms, cradled like something sacred and ridiculous, is a sopping orange kitten.
“Don’t be mad,” Cheng Xiaoshi says before Lu Guang can even blink.
“You’re dripping on the floor,” Lu Guang replies, frowning as Cheng Xiaoshi steps further into the sunroom.
A trail of puddles follows him across the tiles, and Lu Guang’s eye twitches just slightly as he watches the water spread.
“Lu Guang.”
“You’re going to flood the tile.”
"Lu Guang~"
“I told you to bring an umbrella.”
“Guang Guang,” Cheng Xiaoshi pleads, lifting the kitten like an offering.

Somewhere, a cat yowls. Probably not Elizabeth.
He thinks about the promise made with a flower ring. A family made from nothing but a child’s belief.
He wonders if Cheng Xiaoshi would still choose him if he remembered it all.
in which Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang met as kids, Lu Guang remembers, Cheng Xiaoshi does not, and somewhere between blurred memories and a camera’s shutter, they begin to fall into something tender and unnamed.

Summary
There’s a question on Cheng Xiaoshi’s lips as he turns to look up at Lu Guang, and it’s clear that Lu Guang is not only expecting it, but fully prepared to answer it. He doesn’t even let the words pass Cheng Xiaoshi’s lips before he’s answering.
“I thought you might want to relive some of these moments again.” He explains quietly, turning to look at one of the candid photos he had taken of Cheng Xiaoshi. There’s an unfathomable depth to the fondness in his eyes as he does so. It makes everything inside Cheng Xiaoshi ache in a beautiful sort of way. The way Lu Guang looks at him has the same delicacy as a sunset, soft and warm, gentle and unimposing. But it has the same depth as the ocean. “And I thought you might want to…” He trails off for a second, the words seeming to stick somewhere in his throat. Cheng Xiaoshi waits with bated breath to hear how that sentence is going to end. “See yourself from my point of view.”

“What is all this?” He asks after a few seconds.
Lu Guang lowers the camera for a moment, using his now freed hand to gently grab the other half of the flower crown. He steps up to Cheng Xiaoshi easily, reaching up to settle the crown over his dark hair. Lu Guang had been adamant that red needed to be a primary color of the crown because it had been the red flower tucked in Cheng Xiaoshi’s hair that had started this entire thing. Qiao Ling had insisted on white being the secondary color— it’s your color, Lu Guang, he has to be wearing it! They had agreed on a little yellow and some soft pinks to help broaden the color scheme and to fit in all the flowers that Lu Guang was unwilling to compromise on. And now that he sees it on Cheng Xiaoshi’s head— sees the way the pinks draw out his blush, sees the metaphor in the red and white flowers— he knows that they could not have done a better job.
“It’s a photoshoot.” Lu Guang answers with a smile of his own. “You agreed to be my model, remember?”

Summary
A part of him knows that Lu Guang has always been open to a conversation about what happened and how Cheng Xiaoshi feels, it’s just the blame he hasn’t been agreeable to. But if Cheng Xiaoshi approaches this in an open and honest way, he knows with absolute certainty that Lu Guang won’t shut him out.
“Your scar,” He says finally, fingers trailing along the edges of it gently as if there could’ve been any question as to what he was referring to. “It’s—“ he swallows, closes his eyes. “I feel terrible every time I see it.”
“I know,” Lu Guang answers simply. He doesn’t offer any comfort and Cheng Xiaoshi appreciates that he knows that’s not what Cheng Xiaoshi wants right now.

They tried to outrun the raindrops, but it was impossible. And once they were about halfway home, it became abundantly clear that it didn’t matter— they were already soaked to the bone. Lu Guang’s clothes clung tightly to his frame and Cheng Xiaoshi’s hair hung limp around his cheeks and jaw, dripping. And so Lu Guang slowed from a sprint to a jog, and then to a walk, and then a complete stop, his hand in Cheng Xiaoshi’s slowing him, too. Cheng Xiaoshi doesn’t seem the least bit put out as he comes to a complete standstill with Lu Guang in the middle of a now abandoned street, turning to face him as the rain cascaded down around them and blanketed all other sounds.
That bubble that had found them on the basketball court is back, surrounding them as they try and catch their breath, their hands still locked as they stand toe to toe, staring at each other.
The love that Lu Guang feels for Cheng Xiaoshi in that moment is so overwhelming, it nearly knocks him straight off his feet.

Lu Guang watches him. There’s something unspoken in the space between them. A question. A dare.
The candle wavers.
“I wished for something,” Cheng Xiaoshi admits, “that probably won’t come true.”
