A prequel to my story "What the Ocean Kept", focused around Zul'Jaro and how he inevitably ends up on the island with Thalara.
This is the story of Zul’Jaro, a troll whose life is haunted by violence, loneliness, and the ghosts of his past. Raised on the fringes of his village with his sickly brother D’voro and their cruel, drunken father, Zul’Jaro grew up learning that strength was survival.
Years later, he survives as a fighter in Booty Bay, making money through bloodsport and odd jobs with his goblin partner, Krizwick. But beneath his hardened exterior, Zul’Jaro wrestles with an emptiness he cannot fill—through coin, through women, or even through victory. Memories of his brother’s kindness clash with the lessons of cruelty his father branded into him, leaving him caught between the man he fears becoming and the man he wishes he could be.
