A teenage Itachi has a fling with a girl outside Konoha, which results in the birth of a baby boy. However, when the child's mother unexpectedly dies, the young teenage Itachi is left as a single parent.
Years later, Itachi’s son Raiden has grown into a happy and healthy little boy, and despite being motherless, he enjoys his simple, carefree life inside the Uchiha clan compound. However, when his father unexpectedly decides to go on a killing rampage, leaving him and his Uncle Sasuke, as well as a great-uncle who happened not to be in the compound at the time, as the only survivors, little Raiden’s world shatters around him. Abandoned and traumatized by his father, Raiden slips into despair, whilst his Uncle Sasuke becomes consumed by thoughts of bloody revenge.
Meanwhile, Akirou Uchiha, the illegitimate younger half-brother of Fugaku, a lazy and carefree bachelor, simply can’t believe the turn his life has taken. By sheer luck, he survived his clan’s massacre, but now he's the sole guardian of two traumatized little boys. Even worse, he knows absolutely nothing about raising children, especially traumatized ones.

He’s a curse to those who get close to him, used to people breaking down his barriers before leaving or dying in some horrific manner. He’s kept a count, reasoned it down to a science.
So when Shisui dies and Itachi leaves, the first thought that came to his mind was simple—
Ah. It happened again.
But when Shisui returns a week after the Uchiha Massacre, banged up, yet still breathing, Kakashi isn’t sure what to think.
His ghosts don’t usually come back.

That’s right. It was just his father. Just the clan elders. Just a few righteous Uchiha who tried to stop Shisui from killing them. Not more than forty of the hundred Uchiha.
Just under half of his clan.
Alternatively: The Uchiha Massacre happens by Shisui's hand two years earlier, while Itachi is none the wiser to his motivations. He's now eleven, turning twelve soon, and he has issues. Must be a side-effect from being in ANBU as a literal child. Or the fact your best friend killed half your clan. Who knows.
