Problem AU. Anthony Lockwood is the Ministry's youngest agent, eighteen and already shaping up to be one of the few adults who keep their Talent. Lucy is a conscript from a small northern town, sentenced for Visitor-related crimes to a life as a Ministry asset until they deem her rehabilitated from her lawless ways or, more likely, her death. Their paths cross when Lockwood is assigned as Lucy's handler. Bonds are forged. Trust and loyalties are tested.

Pete can feel the muscle in Patrick’s jaw tense. But as soon as Pete says it, he knows it's the truth. In his experience, love mostly involves adrenaline and erratic decisions, the hydroplaning before the car crash, the malfunction at the top of the drop tower, good luck realigning your limbs. This slow turning of gears, the logical chain of events that began with either the day Pete was born or the day he first saw Patrick on the other side of that door and ended with Patrick’s fingers in his mouth did not amount to love. It was too steady for that.

"It seemed like a fitting tribute," she says in wooden tones. Be it dream or vision, she might as well play along— draw this out until reality comes crashing back. Who knows when he'll come to her again as solid and as vibrant as this?
"I see." Suddenly he's leaning into her, their faces so close together. "Tell me," he murmurs, his lips almost brushing against hers, "have you ever heard of the term kissing cousins?"
She registers the smell of alcohol on his breath at the same time that his eyes flutter shut and he slumps face-down into her lap, snoring softly. You're alive, is all she can think at first, staring down at his head of lush black hair.
