Ilya Rozanov thinks his landlord is an uptight old man with an unhealthy attachment to building code. They have exactly one thing in common: they hate each other.

Featuring: smoke detectors, rooftop renovations, and sexual tension disguised as property maintenance.

“It’s not fooling around. It hasn’t been that for a long time. We’re… in a relationship. I love him, Mom.”

Yuna’s eyes flitted between the two men, back and forth, until they rested on Ilya’s. His heart was racing but he was determined to make Shane proud in that moment. “And you love my son?”

“More than anything,” Ilya replied honestly, feeling Shane tangle their fingers together between them. “I did not mean for you to see that.”

“I know, I think we all wish that, Rozanov,” Yuna said with a wry smile.

Thank you for being parents to me today. Was nice to not feel scared and alone. Love being part of Hollander family. ❤️

“My god, even I never get a heart emoji from you,” Shane laughed, handing the phone back to Ilya, who quickly sent the message. “It must be love.”

“It is,” Ilya said as his phone pinged again, a message from Yuna lighting up the screen.

And we love you, Ilya. We're here for you and Shane, always. Thank you for letting us take care of you. ❤️

    Summary

Ilya let out a quiet laugh, shaking his head. “I want to be perfect for you, Shane. To make up for all the time we lost.”

“I don’t want perfect,” Shane said quietly, stroking Ilya’s cheek. “I want something real. Something that we fight to make work, because we want it so much. Because being together is so much fucking better than being without each other.”

    ***

Ten years ago, Shane and Ilya loved each other in secret and let each other go anyway.

Now Shane, captain of the Ottawa Centaurs, is a single dad to four-year-old Ollie, and good at pretending he doesn’t think about the man he lost when they were younger and terrified of the fallout of being caught. Then one chance meeting turns into drinks, lingering looks, old feelings, and suddenly Ilya Rozanov is everywhere again.

Some things, it turns out, never really leave you.

As Shane and Ilya fall back into each other’s lives - and into something softer, steadier, and openly theirs this time — they realise maybe they’re finally ready for the life they used to dream about.

Or: two hockey players who were each other’s first love reconnect ten years later and slowly build the family they always wanted.
