Summary
When Knuckles first woke, he thought he was having a nightmare. He was the last of his kind. All his family, tribe, species were dead. Their rotted corpses lay strewn out as far as the eye could see. He’d squeezed his eyes shut and prayed he could wake up from this horrible dream.
Wade found him. He hugged Knuckles and told him everything would be okay now. The nightmare was over.
Knuckles believed him so he opened his eyes. But the nightmare wasn’t over. It was just real-life now.

Summary
Fighting zombies, like fighting robots, wasn’t what Sonic wanted to be doing. But as long as he had to fight some bad guys, might as well have them be guilt-free, disposable baddies so you can feel even more awesome when you kick their butts. But also… fighting a zombie horde just sounded cool!
Or at least that’s what Sonic thought when he ditched the evacuation effort with Knuckles. Then he actually saw them.
Sonic bolted.
He was miles away before he was able to process: Those had been undead echidnas. Knuckles wasn’t with him. Sonic had left him behind.
Maybe if he hadn’t, things would have been different. Maybe Knuckles wouldn’t have joined forces with the necromancer. Sorry, maybe ‘Enerjak’ wouldn’t have joined forces with the necromancer, since that was the lame new name he was trying to make happen.

Summary
Knuckles lay recovering on the floor of shame, watching while Sonic and the fox took turns with their strange ‘VR’ device. They looked ridiculous fighting against nothing and it helped belay the boredom of the floor.
On one of his non-turns, Knuckles caught Tails eyeing him and then the area around him. Knuckles didn’t look to know that he’d been gathering quite a collection of fur on the floor. He might need to gather up some of his hair before the Wachowskis started to suspect there was something wrong with him.
Which was sort of true, but they didn’t need to know that.

“I’m here for moral support." Wade patted the spot next to him. Knuckles understood this as an invitation to sit beside him, an honor he readily accepted.
“Who here needs to be supported morally?”
“Well,” Maddie answered. “We actually wanted to talk with you, Knuckles. We just want to clear the air so we all understand each other.”
“I… understand,” Knuckles lied flawlessly.
“We’ve noticed some tension,” Tom began speaking and Knuckles tensed. “Specifically between–” he waved between the two of them “--you and me.”
Knuckles’ eyes widened. Was Tom discussing the matter openly now? Perhaps that was why Wade was here. But his friend must be so confused!
Knuckles turned to him and explained: “Tom is planning to kill me.”

Summary
Since he first came to live with them, they’d gotten used to Knuckles roaming the halls at strange hours of the night. Sometimes he’d even leave the house. Tom had convinced himself not to worry about it. Knuckles was just patrolling.
And while Tom and Maddie had more control over Knuckles now than they used to, it was really just because he liked them enough to allow them to set boundaries. ‘No patrols’ wasn’t a hill they were looking to die on. They’d definitely never worried that it was anything other than what it was. It was just a weird Knuckles habit.
Except apparently it was a Symptom. Specifically ‘hypervigilance’. Because Knuckles had post-traumatic stress disorder.

Love this a lot, having Tom and Knuckles chatting! I see a lot with Knuckles and Maddie, so for one it was fun to also see Tom's side of it. And then just reading about Knuckles dealing with issues.. my angst loving side is pleased (/silly)!
Also I love the note of him being able to sense electricity!

“When we get home, you are grounded!” She said. “That means no–” here’s where she would rattle off the fun things he was suspended from: TV? He didn’t care about TV. Video games? He didn’t play any. Going out with friends? He didn’t really have any.
“No going outside!” She said.
“What?!”
“Yeah!” Judging by his angry gasp, she’d actually found a consequence he would actually feel. “No training. No runs. No hiking. You are housebound, young man!”
Knuckles yanked on his seatbelt. It locked. He yanked again and broke it completely from its socket.
There was a chorus of ‘Hey!’ ‘What are you doing?’ ‘Dude, chill!’ ‘Knuckles, calm down–!’
Then the back of the car exploded.
The front end was blasted forward into the other lane. Tom jerked the wheel, tires and passengers screaming. The wild swerve had the car tipping violently to the side. Just when Maddie was sure they would flip, it swung back the other way and the car landed, with a jerky bounce, right-side-up, stationary, and seemingly fine. Except the back of the car was gone.
And so was Knuckles.
