Heart hammering so hard and fast against his sternum that it felt as though it were permanently clenched, held stiffly in place, straining.
He was dying. Oh fuck, he was dying."

Mark Heathcliff survived September 1992, but Cesar Torres did not. An alternate killed Mark's best friend and, one way or another, he's going to get revenge. If he dies trying, well, that's a win too, right?

"Then, abruptly, Mark seemed to straighten up, the weapon in his hands no longer shaking, held securely despite the blood and pain he must have felt to do so.
"Mark?" He asked.
"You fucking bastard."
It was an impulsive thing, really. He could see it in Mark's eyes - the intrusive thought, the longing to hurt another being as he had been, the brief consideration.
His righteous anger.
The gunshot rang out."
Mark does not die in September 1992, but his friend, Cesar Torres, hasn't been the same since his mother died.
Or: An alternate tries a little too hard to be human. It goes about as well as you'd expect.

A few minutes later, Mark was sitting with his back against the door. His face ached, but especially his right eye and nose. He brought a finger to his upper lip and looked at his hand. His finger was coated in blood, which made him feel even sicker than before.
“Let me out, please…” Mark pleaded. His voice was hoarse, and he felt sudden deja vu.
He was there again, in the bedroom with his bible in his hands. He was rocking back and forth on the ground, sobbing as hard as he could. He called out to his mother and father, praying that maybe— just maybe they could save him. The room was always dark, but the analog television in his bedroom would turn on from time to time. To show a photo of that hooded man and his smile. To ridicule him and laugh at him.

Thatcher Davis has a lot on his plate. He has his job as a police lieutenant, the #00432 case, and now a traumatized seventeen year old boy in his house, who's family seemingly disappeared.

Mark sighed and sulked back into his seat. It’s warm and comforting. He wanted to lay down in the warmth forever and let his burning indignity destroy every sin he has ever committed. To burn every mistake he’s ever made in his life and watch everything he has ever worked for ignite into flames. Because at the end of the day, whatever Mark worked for always got destroyed. Suddenly, a question Thatcher wasn’t expecting. “Why did you save me?”
“You called me.” Mark could hear the confusion laced in Thatcher’s voice. “Did you hit your head or something? Do I need to take you to the hospital?”
“No, I mean the alternate incident.” Mark explained. “You didn’t have to. Other people were dying to alternates, but you saved me. You could have saved anyone else. Why me?”
“Mark, are you thinking of killing yourself?

Usually, when something like this happens, Bob would call Graham. There’s an awful irony in it, that when he calls for help with nightmares now the police answer. There’s also a reason that he doesn’t use an old landline, a fear that even the act of merely holding the thing will cause whatever’s broken in him to click back into place.
Their thoughts have gone off-track.
Usually, when something like this happens, Bob would call Graham. But tonight he can’t trust himself to keep the details of the nightmare vague, can’t trust his voice not to skip as though he were calling with a bad signal the way it had from beyond the door, can’t trust himself to say he is afraid rather than tell Graham to be afraid.
So instead he hugs his knees to his chest and ignores the fact that his kind should not be able to cry.

or: Bob has an unpleasant reminder of the skeletons in his closet in the form of a nightmare. Luckily or unluckily, Graham does, too.

When Cesar Torres decides to go over to Mark's house for the night, he doesn't think much of it. The two were really close friends, and they had sleepovers frequently. So what if there was a warning going around, broadcasts begging them to stay home?
He doesn't think much of it, that is, until he has a nightmare. Until he remembers his Mom is alone at home.
Or: Cesar Torres meets an Alternate that night, but it doesn't end as it should; Cesar wakes back up, and he's no longer human.

Summary
Cesar helps Mark escape his room by accident. Mark expects everything to go back the way it was, but the delusions linger, and suddenly he lost his mind. Even worse, he still feels trapped in that room, and words in the back of his head tell him that he was supposed to end it all with a bullet through his brain. But Mark knows isn't that easy. Not at all. Because death brings grief, and that will fall upon Cesar. And since that was true, Mark knows he'll be trapped forever.
Or: Mark isn't the same person he used to be.
Or: Life in the eyes of a M.A.D "survivor".

Set in the same universe and also as a prequel to Predator and Prey, this time Mark has to deal with an Alternate that has stolen his friend's identity. Instead of being scared and being a crybaby about it, Mark plays the same psychological game that the Alternate has set for him.
