“Oh, gods forbid they respond positively to you doing a good thing,” Neve deadpans. She squeezes him a little again. “That’s sort of how it works, Astarion.”
She can’t even see it. Believes the best of them all so earnestly, himself included, that she can’t see how it would all fall away without her at the center. It’s enough to make a person feel like they might actually deserve it.
“And by it, you mean…?” he asks instead.
Her huffed laugh of disbelief ruffles the hair at his neck. “Friendship, you idiot,” she answers. “And the general acquisition thereof.”
Astarion cuts a sideways look at her as best he can with her still nestled so close. “And is that what we are? Friends?”
He’d meant it to tease her, and yet finds that the silence before her answer twists his stomach. Because…he doesn’t actually know, either.
“Yes, Astarion,” Neve says gently, after a moment. “I think we’re very good friends.”

Summary
"Gale...he's gone."
"Gone?" Astarion's eyebrows raise in surprise. "As in dead?"
I shake my head sadly. "No...just...gone." My voice cracks on the last word and I have to take a deep breath to compose myself.
A look of understanding crosses Astarion's face and he nods slowly. "Well, it looks like he really went all in on his illusions this time."
After defeating the Nether Brain, Gale makes a promise to Elara: he will move to Waterdeep and marry her. However, he breaks his pledge when he feels the pull of his former goddess, Mystra, and leaves to forge the Karsus Crown and become a god, which leaves Elara feeling betrayed and alone.
Astarion, now fully consumed by the shadows, offers her a new mission. Together, they try to rebuild themselves and move on from their past. As they rely on each other in unexpected ways, they will find a new sense of purpose in the form of 7000 spawn and a murder.

Summary
Astarion didn’t get jealous. Scared and lonely? Well yes, of course he did. He even felt angry and vengeful as well but when one considers the life he had been forced to live up until his involuntary relocation to the nautiloid you could hardly blame him for feeling those things.
Astarion was sure that he had never been jealous before yet here he was, most certain that as he stared across the fire of their ever-growing camp that was exactly what he was feeling and all because Gale of bloody Waterdeep couldn’t leave well enough alone.

Fear had been Astarion's close companion the past two centuries, and probably all of his life before that, if he could recall much of it; but this fear was not for himself. For a brief second, he hadn't known if Tav would get back up, and that prospect scared the absolute shit out of him. Not even because of the worm or Cazador or her blood but because it meant that she could be gone from this world, and he could no longer comprehend of his life without her; he'd bound their fates. All of a sudden he’d felt sick to his stomach. All of the guilt, the self-loathing that clung to him like a shadow, had been for nothing because somewhere along the way, and he wasn't even sure when, his lies had ceased to be lies. When you build everything on the truth, maybe that's all that's left in the end. And the truth was that Astarion felt… something for Tav. He didn't even have the words to define it, but it was stronger than he thought himself capable of feeling for another person, and that scared him almost as much as the thought of losing her.
