He blinks and blinks and blinks again but he's still in the hospital and he still feels like shit and his mom is dead and Shane is far away and he thinks he's depressed and there is something inside of him that he doesn't know what to do with.
Fuck, he thinks, in russian and in english and in french, even. Fuck.Or, in 2020, Ilya has a (very) unplanned, (very) complicated pregnancy, Shane has to learn that sometimes things don't work out the way he planned, and some other things. Set in The Long Game, kind of.

2014: The Sochi Olympics for most of the population.
For Shane Hollander it was a very intense year, from being ghosted by his rival/fuckbuddy after winning his silver medal.
For Mabel Hollander, it was the best year of her life, after finally accepting that she was never going to receive the same attention from her parents as her perfect older brother... at least Shane had the decency to pay for her college education in Boston.
For Ilya Rozanov, it was the year he won the cup for the first time, and when he met a girl who terrified and fascinated him in equal measure. Damn the Hollanders and their knack for making his life more complicated but also happier.

Summary
The first time they’d done this, in Ilya’s bed, Shane had been mystified at Rozanov’s insistence that he not enter the nest without Shane’s permission. Now, Shane feels something akin to smugness flexing its claws in his chest. A primal satisfaction at the rightness that he is the one with the power - at present, if not for much longer - alpha just outside the nest and at his mercy.
Like Shane will only yield for someone who has earned it. He can draw out Ilya’s suffering just a little longer, make him earn it.
Shane rakes his gaze over the delicious chest and bicep muscles bunching above the edge of the nest. “Waiting for something, Rozanov?”
“Are you going to let me into your nest, omega?” His pronunciation of the endearment is more Russian than English, accent thickening around the syllables.
“Depends. You gonna give me your knot?”
“Hm, does not sound like begging yet to me.”
Some months after Shane recovers from rejection sickness in Ilya's bed, they share their heat/rut together at the cottage, both clinging to the delusion it's still casual.
