“You fell asleep,” David says, worrying at his bottom lip. “Were you bored?”
Exer doesn’t want to admit how comfortable he had been, surrounded by David’s scent and David’s warmth and the light pressure from the squeeze of his arm around Exer’s. So he doesn't say anything at all.
David interprets Exer’s silence quickly and drops his gaze to his lap, fidgeting with his fingers.
“Right, sorry. I know you don’t really like musicals.”
Exer stares at the boy in front of him and swallows his guilt.
Because in Mrs. Miller’s house — safe and full of love and far away from the asshole that is William Miller — he thinks maybe he could like musicals.
But that’s too confusing to explain, so he just nods.

Exer grows up loving music, and learning to let himself love David, too.

Summary
“Dad, what was that?” He blurted sharply.
His father’s hand twitched at his side and he peered over the table and toward the window facing the street. “I-I have no idea.”
Exer wordlessly let his gaze follow, his stomach already tightening itself into knots. There were more noises; the rumble of feet slapping against the ground, words of precaution being hurled between people and car doors slamming shut.
The curtains were drawn but they could just about make out vague movements. Silhouettes of what looked like a person moving very slowly, bent over at the waist and stiffly trudging forward.
They were grunting. Neck jolting as they eventually got closer to the side of the house and out of view from the window.

It’s a familiar ache.
It aches like when honey eyes meet blue ones, when a warm arm wraps around his shoulder like shelter in a storm, when David has to resist the urge to poke dimples from a bright smile, when a voice so deep and resolute turns soft and smooth when it’s used towards him.
And then he’s coughing again, and when it stops, there is an identical petal right next to the previous one.

Well, himself and his friends. He mistakenly finds a hidden group of magic people like him. Determined to get his answers, he joins them, forming bonds with people he could relate to so deeply. Then he finds out exactly who’s running the place and all the puzzle pieces come falling into place.

As David learns of this information, he is concerned by the thought that Exer's love for him was nothing but the forced work of the diary. Exer must find the courage to figure out what is bothering David, whilst he is unable to shake the thought that the reason regarded wrong-doings of *him*.

Being in the 9th grade now and having done a whole season of football, Exer was kind of excited to get back into it.
Not that he particularly enjoyed playing.
He had only really joined because Mr. Miller was adamant that Day was a part of the team, and Exer was never going to let his best friend take such a big step on his own. Oh no, he was going to be right by his side.~
