"It's not… about control," He says haltingly. Or rather, it's not the magic he fears losing control of, but rather everything else. It's sort of like organising the data bank. Every entry has a fixed category, definite links. If data is uncategorised, if no lines are drawn, the whole thing would bleed into a chaotic mess. Likewise, the only way Dan Heng can hope to keep his identity intact is by distancing himself from irrelevant data. The past that isn't his stays shut in a box on the bottom shelf, and if someone else moves it into view, Dan Heng will put it back where it belongs. "Not… the kind of control you're thinking about, anyway."

Are you working?
Yingxing scoffs to no-one in particular. It’s the middle of the night, of course he’s working. He puts down the project he’s gotten carried away with and traces the word yes with one finger against his palm. Stay where you are, Dan Feng writes back.
Well, he wasn’t exactly planning on doing anything else.
Approximately fifteen minutes later, the door to his workshop swings open. The hinges are silent but the person behind them is markedly not.
“Yingxing. I need something sharp.”
Okay. Not what he was expecting.

Summary
Everyone knows that yellow and purple look horrible together, right? And- and it’s a tattoo parlour- surely the owner must have some experience in art, except not only do the colours clash, their distribution is not at all aesthetically pleasing, all clumped together in misshapen bundles. But in any case, this wouldn’t normally be enough to cause Mydei to take action. Except. This tattoo parlour and its ugly flower arrangements happen to be located right next to a florist. Mydei’s florist. In other words, it would be far too easy for a potential customer strolling past to assume the yellow and purple monstrosity to be Mydei’s work.
Those flower arrangements are a threat to his business, and he’s going to do something about them.
or: Mydei's neighbour is even more annoying than he is attractive. This causes Problems.

And because Dan Heng is cruel, he does not allow Blade the peace to come to terms with any of this. Instead, he lowers Cloudpiercer into an idle stance- and the spear looks wrong too, even though it felt the same against the monsters’ flesh in Blade’s periphery- and says, in a level voice, “it’s been a while.”
That’s the breaking point- not his strange new horns, curved and resting against the curls of his hair like a crown, not the fact that even after his boots have settled back on the ground he still stands barely taller than Blade, not even the way his eyes, flecked with the same shade of gold as his horns, look straight into Blade’s without their familiar hesitation. It’s his voice, budding with something horrifyingly close to empathy. To genuine interest.
Blade is briefly overrun by the feeling that he doesn’t know this person.

"You've been doing that a lot," Stelle states it like a fact once Sunday leaves the car, book in hand. The room feels dimmer all of a sudden, and Dan Heng isn't sure why. Another thing to ponder.
"Do what?" Dan Heng knows perfectly well what she's talking about, and he knows she knows he knows what she's talking about. Regardless, Dan Heng finds himself being evasive with no clear purpose. It feels a tiny bit strange.
"Look at people like they're a chess game you're about to lose," They say, eyeing the actual chess game in front of them with a disgruntled expression.

"Also," She says, totally nonchalant. "Dan Heng has been staring at Sunday like he's a particularly delicious piece of meat.""Huh!?" March squeaks, her eyes wide and unblinking as she stares at her.
"Huh?" Dan Heng echoes, willing the heat that is now slowly creeping up his neck to dissipate.
"Huh?" Stelle blinks at them, as if they hadn't said that insane string of words.
Or: Sunday joins the Express. Dan Heng is immediately obsessed.
