Following the events of their first case together and the TRIBUNAL, Kim Kitsuragi ends up nursing what he thinks is more than a simple concussion. He transfers out of the 57th and joins his disco partner-in-crime at what they both do best. And if there's an art heist gone wrong, a roadtrip through Revachol, and some psychic heart-to-hearts along the way, who can blame him?
Or: For some reason he now has VOICES in his head. Not only that, but it seems... Harry can hear them too?

EMPATHY: The pigeon is shivering. She doesn’t seem to be able to move far, her useless wing flopping sadly at her side, but she shrinks back as much as she can within the box.
You: “Oh no, no, I’m not going to hurt you,” you say, clumsily holding out a broad hair-lined hand. The pigeon flinches, then, as you hold your hand as still as you can and make no move to harm her, regards you with a mix between fear and curiosity.
LOGIC: She’ll die without you, Harry. Maybe she’ll die with you too. Is this a responsibility you can bear?Harry and Kim spend the evening tending to an injured pigeon. They get talking. Things begin to spiral in unexpected directions.

Summary
When a body is found lashed to a pier piling in Martinaise, Harry and Kim must figure out how it got there, who put it there, and why. Which is hard when there is nothing identifiable on the body and nobody seemed to have cared enough about whoever it was to report them missing. Harry must do what he does best: interrogate everyone in this goddamn town about things seemingly unrelated to the case, while Kim does what he does best: keep Harry out of trouble when possible and get into the trouble with him when not.
Meanwhile, another part of Harry's brain is devoted to figuring out exactly when he started being able to discern whole sentences from a raise of Kim's eyebrow or a twitch of his finger, and what the warm feeling that settles in his chest every time that happens means.

THOUGHT GAINED: IN UNFAMILIAR SKIN
Problem: There is a sizeable list of things that have happened to you following your first 14 hours awake and alive as less of a drunk force of nature, and more of a human person. While much of this list can be naturally attributed to your complete and utter lack of memory, part of it you can't help but feel is something new that has settled in while you weren't looking. Something that has made you lose your reflection, and pulse altogether. It's an array of new thoughts and senses that have taken root in the base of your skull, making you hesitate to enter a building without permission, or detect when someone is there before you have even seen them. It's just under your skin, but you don't know what it could be.

TIME TO INTERNALIZE: 72 HOURSINLAND EMPIRE (Easy: Success) - Hmm. This ones a doozy. That's okay- you'll take to it soon. Like a natural fight-or-flight reflex, or newly ingrained instincts. We'll figure it out.

Back in the infirmary at Precinct 41, Nix Gottlieb immediately has you strip off your trousers. It takes a heroic effort but you do not say, “Buy me dinner first?”
“Good to see you made it,” he says, nonchalantly, removing the bandages and frowning at your torn stitches. The wound in your thigh oozes and you twist the corners of your mouth. The leg does not seem your leg, does not seem attached to the body that does not seem to belong to you. You’re sure it is someone else’s leg, cleverly folded beneath the jaundiced torso that was beneath the head that also cannot be your own. You looked out at the world through stolen eyes; now you look down at the hands assigned to you. They’re covered in dried mud and blood and motor oil.

A carriage full of strangers takes you from the only life you have known--solving a murder in Martinaise, and into the smoking wreck of a life of that other guy. Harrier Du Bois. You don't know this guy, and you don't think you'd like him, but you try to piece together his existence, anyway. Meanwhile, a Lieutenant Kitsuragi recovers from being shot.

His newly burgeoning sobriety and his EXTREMELY professional relationship with Kim Kitsuragi are enough of an issue. Now he has to relearn his voltas, try to understand new and exciting technology, and continue not killing himself; all to solve a seemingly impossible case.
The city calls for his help, even when he can’t hear it. And he has to solve the case before he loses himself, all over again.
